junior
Mabel and Forget me Not now down to £10k or offers. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/narrow-boat-canal-boat-pair-of-historical-wooden-boats-Mabel-and-Forget-me-Not-/182191752582?hash=item2a6b798586:g:~RwAAOSwOVpXUe2e. But looking very sad when we passed them last weekend. I think i read somewhere recently that they had patrol notices on them, so the owners maybe under some pressure to get them moved now (sold)? Athy
I think i read somewhere recently that they had patrol notices on them, so the owners maybe under some pressure to get them moved now (sold)? So they're moored on the tow[path side. I had somehow imagined the offside, as that's where the majority of ex-working boats which I see tend to be (I wonder why). Athy
post 3696 shows them to be moored in the bushes and submerged. Yes indeed, but that does not indicate which side they're on. Bushes are not unknown on the towpath side. My real point was, if they're on the offside (private moorings) why would they have patrol notices, which as far as I am aware are generally awarded to overstayers on the towpath side? Ray T
Really? I never knew that. Why not? So it didn't obstruct the working horse drawn boats. But of course there is always the exception! David Mack
They were looking very sorry for themselves last weekend when we passed them... Yup. We passed them about half an hour before we passed you. (We were on Fulbourne). The advert mentions Warwick, but I have seen a pair of abandoned-looking wooden boats on the Oxford not far from Braunston Turn. Are they the same ones? Mabel and Forget me Not are 'moored' on the offside, just west of Shrewley Tunnel.

Ray T
No, FmN and Mabel are north of Shrewley on the GU. The ones at Braunston are Hardy and I'm not sure what the butty is (now floating again). As mentioned the green one is Hardy: In better days: Hardy was Mike Humphris first command when he was 15! I think the other boat is Argo. Don't know which butty it is by the winding hole at Wolfhampcote though. Edited July 29, 2016 by Ray T

mykaskin
I remember "Baildon" back in 1979 at the Northwich IWA National. We had a "race" up the Weaver and "Neptune" left "Baildon" in her wake, I thought at the time the stern was odd but was apparently what the owner wanted, as a cruiser conversion she seemed fine but applying the early GUCCC livery seemed an odd choice as the boat didn't look like a H&W motor. Here we are at rest after the race, David Blagrove in charge of Neptune with John Hodgkinson, great days back then. . Thats Rose of Yorkshire following behind (yellow cabin), and I was onboard, with my sister and parents, aged nearly 6!

Jrtm
The sad thing is this has got to be one of the few butties that are twisted and hogged normally its the motors that do this. Its just sad but there going to get close to the point of total rebuilds not just few planks and good dock work
Jrtm
I looked at them just after xmas?? Cant remember now but i couldnt convince the wife to take them on. Youll prob find there not licanced hence the force of sale as they have prob played the were selling them card a few times. For the work there about a 2k sale. If its the same situation as before the owners now live in france i think it was and think it was the mother of the owner selling i tried to buy ages ago but when i said i wouldnt pay anywhere near 20 odd k for them i just got told be can talk about price i said i didnt want to waist time looking untill they would conferm they would concider a very low offer and i go no where. I then showed the wife and i got are they going cheap or free i said no and i just got a no. I wouldnt mind the ads but there from years ago after they pumped them out and gave them a quick tidy i think people wo saw the pics but didnt see the boat would be rather anoyed and claiming money back threw ebay for a fause sale due to faulse advertising due to the pics
Jrtm
I love the old wording too. Mable just needs corking. But has a small leak (i think it needs a bit more than this????) Fmn neeeds a new plank on waterline .Gunwhales need doingTop plankBack BendsMid keelson needs doing but bottoms are good. So what the ad says in real life is the boat needs everything replacing except a few bottoms. That after 8 years of neglect will prob need doing too. pete harrison
Ice comes and goes. Even so, how many would use TYCHO's blade in earnest bearing in mind her age. But why would that be any reason to remove the blade? I have known TYCHO since the early 1970's when it was owned by Alfred Matty and Sons Ltd, and I have always had a 'soft spot' for it and its ice ram. I am surprised to see it is still for sale via Apollo Duck, but why has it not sold ? http://narrowboats.apolloduck.co.uk/feature.phtml?id=473783 Is £45000 too much ? Is the ice ram really that unappealing ? Is it that the cabin appears to be fitted as a day cabin ? (I thought it was fitted with a conventional cabin but the Apollo Duck photographs suggest otherwise) Is it that the plain livery is unappealing ? (and arguably the blue tops) Is it that the boat rocks around a bit ? Is it that ex-working boats are losing their appeal ?

I am surprised to see it is still for sale via Apollo Duck, but why has it not sold ? http://narrowboats.apolloduck.co.uk/feature.phtml?id=473783 It's a very specialist thing, isn't it. Lovely to own if you want to, but only a small number of people will probably want to. You have no doubt kept a record, but wasn't it priced higher than this initially? I thought it probably was, but could be wrong, but I would say that anything more than the £45k would have been a deterrent. I also didn't realise that it had not been refitted as a full back cabin. There is (or was) some living accommodation under the blue tops, but I don't know the detail, and I don't think the listing mentions it. Another deterrent to some might be the Petter PD3 - people do not seem to have a high regard for the air cooled Petters, even though they make a cracking sound. I'm genuinely surprised at just what a tight fit that PD3 is in there. I thought Tycho's engine room was highly original, so should be 5' 6" long, but is a PD3 plus Parsons box nearly as long as that? There is hugely more room in "Sickle" with it's Lister HA3 with very good walking space around the front of the engine, which this one is certainly lacking.
