Hemp Rope - What Can You Do With It

Featured Posts

I have been given 10 metres of 10mm hemp rope made in The Ropery at Chatham Dockyards. I don't need to use it as rope as I have spares already and was wondering what I could make out of it to keep as a souvenir or something. Any suggestions - I have not worked with rope before.

I don't need a clothes line or somewhere to hang Christmas cards from though!

10m is not a lot- not enough for a side fender probably..  You might make an ocean plait mat or something similar.

A set of coasters perhaps.  Or a selection of common  knots on a board, labelled and framed?

If it is real natural fibre hemp it is susceptible to rot so needs not to be continuously damp.

I thought rope used to be sized in circumference and if so 10mm is not much more than CaRT blue string, but I expect it is dimeter as most rope seems to be sized in these days.

I thought that was the difference between metric and imperial measurements, it caught me out in my younger days

Carrick mats are always nice.

Is it a 4 strand? I had some hemp rope and it was 4 strand with a central core.

I would put a lighter to it to make sure its not a synthetic version as they seem similar.

Monkeys fists. If it is 10mm it might cover a golf ball. Good for throwing lines.

4 turns can look tidier than 3.

Using it to make crosspointed fenders which are then kept indoors as decoration is another option. Lay it over a piece of garden 'ose.

Crosspointing is really easy you unlay the strands from each end of a length then tuck them over each other round and round a core made of 'ose or a length of rope.

Whips are good.

You could make a captain's daughter with it.

What shall we do with the drunken sailor......?

Put him in a bunk with the captain's daughter.

Sounds nice ? No it isn't !!

Its just my phone. No idea what happened there was a light of some sort.

I think its one of the security lights for the royal mail sorting orifice.

Just below is the shrine to the dangerous dogs the police shot on the towpath in 2023.
