  5. When a sand bar appeared in the Yonne below Clamecy Lock a dredger was sent for. Thoughts of a specialised vessel panting into view were dispelled by the arrival of a lorry with pontoons on it. These, when clipped together, supported a digger which moved the sand to a less important part of the river, where it eventually washed away. The ingenious part of it all was the use of a second digger, to which one of the mooring ropes was tied, then moved down the bank to keep the whole thing tight. Two hours later the ensemble departed, job done.

  9. Yup. Previous thread: Boat was insured 3rd party only, which they admitted was a mistake. They have accepted they will bear the cost of refloating together with subsequent cleanup and refitting. They turned down the suggestion of crowdfunding. And their attitude seems to have remained pretty positive too. I hope they succeed!

  10. I found it really interesting to see how RCR actually raised the boat - a lot more interesting than watching someone waxing lyrical about a composting toilet ? haggis

  22. I first heard them via a third generation bootleg tape - the studio versions sounded quite different That does of course take us to the classic cassette tape advert:

  33. We used to deliver coal to Bourton lock. This poor photo is from 1975. She had a small cruiser that she used to go to Banbury for supplies. I went arse of tip carrying a bag of coal into the outbuilding as she had spilt paraffin on the floor. Think it was light by oil lamps.

  35. I have tied the bow and stern line together then place the loop around my waist. Just lean into the rope and the boat will move at reasonable speed. Easy to adjust the rope slightly to steer.

  37. Debatable ? Apart from reading up on this -- from sources which actually did properly controlled listening tests, not just "this sounds better" anecdotes -- have you actually done a proper comparison yourself? Preferably one where you don't know which is which to avoid any preconceived conclusions... We've had ours about 5 years now with no problem. All electrical devices fail sometimes, the question is are they especially bad or not. All I can say is that the Roberts radios seem to be better built than most...

  38. Spotify and a pair of little bluetooth speakers! I am a traditional type person and like CDs and wires but have had to accept that Spotify and Bluetooth is pretty good.. The speakers are the Ruark MR1mk2, they are small but just about qualify as "proper" HiFi speakers. I use a DAC and optical cable to connect but my wife uses Bluetooth and I can't hear the difference, some of the newer Bluetooth protocols are able to do HiFi quality. Also its essential to get a paid subscription to Spotify, this gets rid of the adverts but more importantly gives the option of user higher bitrates which really does sort out the quality limitations of streaming. I must confess that I mostly let Spotify choose my music for me which is much more interesting than making my own decisions. There is a LOT of good music about. .............Dave

  39. I've got an old wind up gramophone complete with new needles somewhere under the stairs. Unfortunately it's the diaphragm type rather than horn. Keep thinking I'll take it to the boat for the craic.

  41. I will be using one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/313220835322 To power my 535 on the boat. You will also need a plug to fit the 535 a suitable cable is https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351319811869 Which if cut in half will give you two plugs. Works well on the test bench at home but haven't yet got it on the boat due to lockdown.

  46. The main difference being you will (probably) get the same boat 10% less if you buy privately. When I am selling boats I look how much a broker is going to take in commission and deduct that from the asking price, I end up with the same amount of money and the buyer saves the commission percentage and gets a 'bargain'. You have no more security or guarantees buying from a broker, they are simply a 'marriage broker' introducing a seller to a buyer for a fee. Do not fall into the thinking that it is 'safer' to buy from a broker, or that they are legally obliged to inform you of the boats faults - they are not.
