  1. I thought I had watched all of the Kelvin flavoured YouTube’s, however this short one had somehow evaded me. It helped quell my withdrawal symptoms for a few minutes?

  15. Would it be possible to have a forum where if people take over a thread with gripes at each other they can move onto? It's getting difficult to get info as I subscribe to lots of useful threads, or started off useful but they degenerated into 'mines bigger than yours' threads and I don't really want to get notifications about when they post their next rant? I love these forums to bits as they are so useful but some conversations at the moment are of no interest to anyone other than those having a go at each other, losing the thread entirely? Hope that makes sense?? failing that can mods lock threads that go waaaay off topic?

  17. Top paddle gear. Not heavy (except the really big buggers at Knowle, and 'er outside can still manage them). No more turns than a Grand Junction bottom gate paddle but much bigger paddles, a really well designed flow into the chamber, and designed to be let fall. What more could you want? N

  25. I have asked stupid questions, usually got a mix of good and useless answers... I just ignore the ones that I dont find useful.... I have never observed moderator athy to be biased, you should not throw allegations like this willy nilly, being a moderator is a thankless job and they are human too, prone to biases and mistakes.

  29. I led a team which looked into reducing the maintenace requirement for BT's operational equipment. By taking and analysing oil samples from standby generators we reduced the frequency of oil changes from yearly to 6 yearly, subject to a 250 hour run limit. However, the BT standby generators have crankcase heaters to keep the coolant hot, so that the generator can start and deliver full load immediately, which eliminates internal condensation which can degrade both the oil and ultimately engine internals.

  31. A new shell will be a better investment if you can afford it. An old boat refitted is still an old boat. I suggest you should only refit an old boat if you really can not afford a new shell, plan to cruise and incrementally refit over several years, or the old boat has some historic value. I would not want a boat with a turbocharger, especially a liveaboard. As Nick Norman very clearly explains in another thread, good torque at low speed is required for battery charging/electricity generation. Turbo engines have the wrong characteristic. ...................Dave

  32. Yes its true but not quite in the way you suggest. You can build it to the requirements of the Law (Recreational Craft Directive) and sell it when you want, or, You can build it how you like and then have to wait 5 years before you can sell it so it has chance to prove it is safe by not killing you, then, you can sell it. Next question : Bukh state their engines are emissions approved to the USA requirements for Lifeboat use, but make no mention of them being CE approved - are they ?

  34. Bear in mind that the relay coil takes about 3A DC so you need push switches that can cope with that current. The last thing you want is for the contacts to weld themselves closed! I also notice that the Tyco has built in freewheel diodes which is great for protecting the buttons, but it also means each coil is polarity sensitive. If you get + and - the wrong way round, something will melt!

  44. Most marinas will do short term at any time. We have left our boats all over the country on the towpath and elsewhere many many times over more than thirty years without problem. We used to years ago do holiday relief to the licensed trade for between 2 weeks and 3 month hits and often just rocked up at boatyards etc and paid. We then used to cruise between a month and up to a year depending in how many beer tokens we had saved. Its all very doable. Better than a secure tied down job if you are lucky enough to be able to do it like we were.
