  1. Just a reminder to all you folks, myself included re the dangers of Co and possibly waking up Dead!! Alarm went off on boat next to mine late last evening, proves the worth of alarms. They had left their ash bucket full of hot ashes inside the boat!! Dont do it, they smoulder as we all know for a couple of days even if freezing cold outside. So ashes outside every time please. Thanks and sleep safely.

  4. Good evening i thought it might help to offer some explanation of why I charge a by the foot price for stretches eight foot and over i will stretch by less than eight feet but the price would be quoted and not fixed a boat that is to be stretched has firstly to be cut in half regardless of how much it is to be stretched by. This is required regardless and is a big part of the job. The steel sheets are Eight foot long and so stretching by six foot for example leaves two foot of spare steel which is not always used immediately i am happy to stretch by any size but it cannot be done by the foot price under eight foot as it is uneconomical i hope this answers any questions Martin

  6. Crikey, this is a long thread for a duff oil pressure sender! Poor old OP is not mechanically minded so he's probably bamboozled now! Four pages and much hand wringing about a knackered engine, plus a debate about whether modern engine manufacturers know what they're doing when they specify their oil, all for a simple ten minute job. Granted, if the fault persists thereafter the landscape changes, but first things first, eh?

  8. Or has gone on holiday with his latest pay packet. In this day and age I really struggle with the concept that people are this stupid to just hand over a wedge of cash to a complete stranger.

  12. We were in Saxilby on Saturday evening. Four boats moored up. Two of which were running generators not only well past the 8pm time limit but also on their back decks under canvas covers with the wind blowing at the stern of the boats. You can not educate everyone!

Choose to use less gas, choose solid fuel cooking, no showering, choose pipe insulation, choose external exhaust breathing apparatus. Choose to dry clothes outside, choose no clothes. Choose microwave ready meals and cold drinks. Choose to live somewhere warmer over winter yet still call yourself a full time liveaboard boater. Choose an inside swimming pool. Choose not to live on a boat. Live in a house. I chose not to live in a house, i chose something else.

  29. Is it the non alcoholic alcohol they contain then? Pretty much. ? The main point of the fermentation here is not the production of alcohol, so while some alcohol is produced during the fermentation process (obviously) it is then lost again in the later stages of the cooking and preparation process - so the soup / paste you buy has no alcohol in it.

  32. Yes, boiling rice and the subsequent draining produces condensation. Result more water in the bilge. And back on topic!!!!!

  33. You probably have a chimney the same height as mine, last week I removed the shove and swept the chimney, it wasn't too bad but as I wanted to do some more work we just stuffed a carrier bag into the chimney to stop the draft, we went to the boat and when we came back no bag, I looked up the chimney and no bag. we found it yesterday in the garden, even with no fire it had sucked all the way up the chimney and through the cowl at the top. Now just imagine a fire at the bottom as well and consider how much air that draws into the fire compared to the 12" imitation chimneys on the roofs of boats wit a total flue length of 5 feet. That is one of the reasons yours burns a lot cleaner and you cant see the smoke

  40. WotEver’s guide to rice cooking: 1 cup of basmati rice to 2 cups of water. Boil gently with the lid on for just 12 mins and then let it sit for 10 mins. Do not lift the lid, do not stir until the 22 mins is up. Always fluffy, never sticks.

  41. It's not a leak it's just condensation, the wood is getting damp as the picture shows, thing is my stove is a the front and I can't run the eberspacher all night. It gets really damp air, I've bought some dehumidifiers like another poster suggested. In the picture it's dried out a bit but it was quite wet yesterday, this is why I thought if moving/sleeping in the middle of the boat hoping it would stop it. Yes yes it's only just started now it's getting cold and the wood on the sliding hatch us turning black in the corners with condensation. Thanks.

  46. 1. Have you worked out the volume of fresh air the engine will draw into its compartment unless you duct it directly to the air intake. On most boats this will reduce the ambient temperature to a significant degree. Also have you thought about the cars where the alternator is behind the engine close to the exhaust manifold? 2. I am afraid the second paragraph is very misleading. Ordinary car dynamos gave a maximum output of (form memory) around 25 to 30 amps. It is true they operated over a much narrower rev range so could not be geared up too much and thus needed more engine revs than an alternator to generate a meaning full charge but even a modest alternator these days can produce twice that and you will see few installations that produce the maximum alternator output at idle. Apart from very ancient three brush dynamos all dynamos worked together with a voltage regulator. OK s it was a mechanical one rather than electronic but the charging voltage was still regulated. In the latest form of dynamo regulator it even regulated the maximum current by mechanical means. If the batteries are not all but fully charged then the batteries will try to demand more current than the alternator can supply at low revs so the charging current is limited by the alternator/engine speed. Only when the batteries are well enough charge to demand less charging current than the alternator can supply will the voltage regulator come into play. The best advice is to charge at the revs that give the maximum charging current and educe the revs as the maximum current the batteries will accept reduces.

  48. Although I don't liveboard,I do spend quite a lot of time messing about on my boat. There is a boat moored opposite and I do smell their smoke but only when the wind is from the North or Norwest. Suggest you ask your marina management for a different berth,or ask your smokey neighbour if you could swap places, and then you can pickle him! Sods law suggests that if you do swap places, the wind will change direction so in the interest of peace and harmony, move to another berth. But,bear in mind that in winter practically all livaboards will have their stoves going, but you might be lucky enough to moor next to a boat with gas or electric central heating.
