  1. Those are daft questions, and reflect more on the questioner than anything else. If you're living in something that's about to sink, you are vulnerable to becoming homeless. You are therefore a vulnerable person. Absolutely nothing to do with anything of a medical nature. People tend to live in the nicest dwelling they can afford to be in. Ergo, your residence is a rotting hulk held together by plastic and tarps, it's the best they have available. If somone is sleeping in a hedge, that's the best they can find for the night. If in a tent in the middle of winter, ditto. In a mansion on the South Downs, much the same. If you really don't think there is a housing problem in this country, you are either extremely rich, in your sixties with no children or simply keep your eyes and mind firmly shut against reality.

  2. You're welcome. I did a dissertation on how alternators work on here once, god knows where it is now. I dread doing it for the cav co axial! If you know precisely how it works, you can usually work out precisely why it doesn't ?

  3. I agree, and I think it is totally irrelevant. Like many discussions on here, the original reason for raising the point was to point out some alleged unacceptable behaviour by a couple of boats. Very quickly, this has changed emphasis to a disection of someones lifestyle, which I would suggest is of no concern to us. By forensically analysing the innocent victim we are in danger of losing the main point, which in my mind is trying to stop hire companies hiring out boats to unsuitable groups. Howard

  4. This is my bread and butter. It sounds like a starter problem to me checked or not. How big a click? little *tic* or big CLUNK! Second, can you post a picture of the unit? I can probably tell you what's wrong and talk you through the repair if so. Too late now but it's not a good idea to beat starters with a hammer unless you know what you are looking at because lots of starters these days have permanent magnets and the traditional theraputic tap can shatter the magnets. Contact serviceability varies, sometimes easy nut and bolt job, sometimes special press tools are needed. I can and will get parts at 57% discount if need be.

  8. Indeed. It is totally unacceptable to let your boat get into such a state that a passing boat sinks it.

  9. Talking generally, some people are too proud or untrusting to ask or even accept help and just try to get buy, maybe even living in a boat that is ultimately going to sink. What ever is done will cost society money, wether it is emergency accommodation, or money to help with mooring and licensing. It is sad that this case has come to this and some compassion for his situation is the decent thing to have. Driving him off the waterways to where we no longer see him does not solve the problem, it only hides it and allows us to pretend that all is well in society. It isn’t.

  10. Oh good. It was a very strange moment indeed, but quite a relief once whoever did it(!) realised what was going on! ?

  13. Telling someone that they are posting tripe and then telling them that they are boring and repetitive is not what I associate with the boating community and particularly not what I find in the canal boat community. Is this a trait you find with people with caravans? School yard bullying, methinks. Why do people have to slag other people off?

  16. I gave to say this is complete bobbins. I can afford to live in far nicer accommodation than a canal boat but choose the boat because I like it. I suspect a lot of posters here and boat dwellers in general are in the same position. I was even evicted from my first boat home by a council saying our boats must be hovels and we should not be allowed to live in them. Same high handed arrogance. It is not for you to dictate where someone else may or may not choose to live.

  17. Something has gone wrong when after years of increasing life expectancy male life expectancy shows a slight decline whereas other comparable countries who already have longer life expectancies are drawing yet further ahead. It ain't the well off that are dying younger in spite of medical advances, it is the vulnerable passing simply because of diminishing care.

  18. And when you climb into your bed tonight And when you lock and bolt the door Just think of those out in the cold and dark 'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round  And sympathy is what we need my friend And sympathy is what we need And sympathy is what we need my friend 'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round No, there's not enough love to go 'round  Now half the world hates the other half And half the world has all the food And half the world lies down and quietly starves 'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round  And sympathy is what we need my friend And sympathy is what we need And sympathy is what we need my friend 'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round No, there's not enough love to go 'round...

  22. Haha, I am actually on my way to pick prince up now.. Though Yeo is not the fastest boat so the journey from London to Wheaton ashton will take a little while. I am really looking forward to finally having Prince and to doing some winter cross-straps practice. For me there isnt really any 'home' to take prince to either, just keep moving round, but I will b around birmingham this winter and shall get him out soon enough and see whats going under the waterline.

  29. I feel the same way about canal boating as I do about cycling. I rarely ride a bike on public roads these days because I can remember a time when roads were quiet, car drivers were considerate and there were a lot more roadside pubs.. I suppose you could say the same about motoring, time was when folk used to go for a drive just for the sheer novelty of it - surely no-one drives for pleasure these days. So I'm just glad I was around in an era when it was possible to truly enjoy these activities. The canals are in decline, and this years drought has thrown in to sharp focus just how unimportant boaters are. We maybe have another decade, possibly less, before some waterways lose their status - it seems unthinkable at the moment but I can see a time coming when the trans pennine canals will be seen as more trouble than they are worth and it will just be a case of keeping the 5 rise open as a tourist attraction. All we can do is enjoy the network while it lasts, it seems a very negative attitude but active boaters are just too small in number these days to have any sort of clout.

  34. if they are choosing a nice place tolive (boat) why do they bespoil by covering the boat in elsans, bags of rubbish and scrap. cleaning up costs nothing, nor does mopping off ; keeping exits clear may save your life when your poor maintainance lets the boat sink or go on fire.

  38. However it has to be said that the Broads are actively policed by both Navigation Rangers, 2 per river per day so anything in the way of nortiness which is reported is acted on immediately plus there are patrols by the Norfolk Constabulary Broads Beat boats. I have first hand knowledge of the rapid response to trouble having lived there for 10 years More than once I've seen hire boats corralled and crews turned off. More than once I've had response to my phone call resulting in damage to one of my boats being inspected and paid for. On the Broads there is no escape from retribution but on the cut the chances of being brought to book are slim to say the least Phil

  39. Yes. A lot more ugly. And provided they are licenced and move at round, what’s the problem with them being ‘semi sunk’ (whatever that means) or ugly? Your boat is no oil painting either.

  42. That is undoubtedly true and I would be among the first to say so, but surely, in the context of the news item under discussion, you can see that that should be the subject of a separate discussion aimed at CRT, and that the emphasis for this thread should on efforts to reduce unacceptable behaviour by such groups, and as such should be aimed squarely at hire companies and CRT? 44. We have got Syd a life jacket but he only wears it when we are on very tidal waters as it is a bit bulky and he finds moving around on the boat wearing it a bit difficult. He is a very confident swimmer and knows to come to the back of the boat when he falls off it so that we can pluck him out. When he doesn't have his life jacket on he always has a harness on which is easy enough to pull him out with. Syd is only a small dog though and at 7kg is easy enough to pull out one handed.

  46. There are two issues here. The first a reletively minor one, An antisocial act bought forward by probably, not much, the inevitable sinking, of a totally unsatisfactory dwelling, but the fact that this was probably the best housing available to a vulnerable person is the real issue. How a society treats it's vulnerable people is a measure of it's civilisation. Logically, pursuing pure economic performance requires discarding those with no potential to make an economic contribution. Euthanasia by neglect. The fact that life expectancy in the US is falling and that in the UK it has now plateued, both from not very flash positions, to me indicates that both the US and UK governments are too far down this path. More compassion is required in our world.

  49. We used to stand a shovel on the grate front then put the newspaper up. It's used to be able to stand the heat longer. Dad made a Ali square shield with a handle for such occurances. We had a pub at the time with three, perhaps four fires to be lit.
