Oh I see. Based on the way you've framed the subject for discussion it looks as though you already have an entrenched view. :-)

You could sandwich (or glue) a piece of thick builders polythene under the mdf to minimise its exposure to the water which will wash onto it. That way it should last a bit longer until you get the newly welded hatch back.
