Jen-in-Wellies
Add corrosion inhibitors to the canal water? No more boat blacking needed ever again. No more weed clogging up propellers. No more grumpy fisherman. Add antifreeze in the winter and we could cruise all year round. 2 1

frangar
Under BW this used to be standard in some parts of the BCN….mind you they sometimes got the mix wrong and it dissolved your hull instead of protecting it…..sadly CRT aren’t as caring…..

"Ankersol" by Morris Lubricants is an excellent inhibitor and costs only £18.90. https://www.premierlubricants.co.uk/vintage-and-classic-cars/ancillary-products/morris-ankorsol-anti-corrosion-fluid.html Oh, a thought though. Might need more than one.
Tracy D'arth
If every boater dumped their teabags into the cut, the tannic acid would do the job, its what Fertan is.
Sir Nibble
Added advantage that the ducks wouldn't have to come out for blacking either.

And vitamin supplements?

Not that they took action themselves, but took advantage of well meaning industrial units who did the job for them. I recall admiring the clear water between Ashted Locks 3 and 4 until I reakise it was produced by an overflowing drain from a canalside plating factory. jonesthenuke
A regular visit to The Crow locks on the BCNS provides a nice coating of oily tar on the surface of the Hull (though probably dissolves any bitumen blacking at the same time). One of the most polluted sections of canal that we have been to.

An excellent suggestion. You'll notice that all the ducks and swans have lost their teeth and have to gum their food with their bills. The waddling walk on the towpath is clearly down to rickets. 3 hours ago, Mac of Cygnet said: Isn't all this nearly a fortnight too late? This gives the opportunity dredge up extra tar and coat both your boat and your arm simultaneously. Alec

That's one of the reasons Phoenix was in such a bad way, moored just downstream of the pump outlet (where the inlet is right by the old tar distillers).
