The Cape of Good Hope pub

Over six quid down the road from me, I won't be going there again.

That's more than I would pay for a pint. It's £3-60 in the pub I use (Rat and Ratchet, Huddersfield) a beer only pub.

Less than a year ago, it was £2-85.

Pubs like any business have to keep ahead of inflation or go under so I can understand the price rises.

It is a sobering thought however that a half litre bottle of Hobgoblin Gold is £1-35 in my local supermarket.

Just been to the local chippy 'cos sproglet asked for fish and firks.

£13 for fish and chips twice!

Bargain!

The chap in the F&C van that pitches up at The Wharf Inn, Fenny Compton was telling me back in summer he is gonna have to put his price for standard F&C up to a tenner per portion, or stop doing it and sell the van.

Enjoy yours at £6.50 while it lasts.

1/3 for fish and chips, shilling the fish and 3 pence for the chips plus scraps

More than once, when I was in 6th form, our young Maths teacher, who was much closer in age to us than to most of his colleagues, squeezed 4 or 5 of us into his sports car and took us for a lunchtime pint in a pub far enough from school for us not to be discovered...

Can't see it happening these days.

Back in 1964 (I was 14) my headmaster took us all to the pub and got us some cider. Below a photo of the head :)

I believe he did, in fact, give up. I bought ‘FnC’ from him on his last visit to Fenny Compton. Or should I say, I sent the boss out to get them.

It would depend on the beer sureley. Does any body recall Greenalls Brewery of Warrington ?

I was born in Ormskirk and until I was eight, lived near St Helens in Rainford.

Whenever Greenhall's were brewing it stank the whole of St Helens out

Fortunately it didn't put me off beer in later life.

Good job you didn't drink any then, that might well have put you off... 😉

Walk down the hill to the Star Inn if you're that close! I do like the Rat & Ratchet though.

The Star closed during lockdown and is now only open (I think) three evenings a week.

It used to be very good, no music, no food, just a good selection of real ales.

Havn't been in since before lockdown, but I am a bit reluctant to go in now because I don't think with reduced openings, the beer will be very good.

A pub landlord once told me, if you want good beer, find a busy pub.
