The Cape of Good Hope pub

Featured Posts

Is it worth the effort?

Passed it a couple of times a few years back and it was closed both times.
I understood it to be a good pub to visit, but the website describes it as a gastro pub.

Anyone been in lately?

I’m not interested in the food, just the booze (and the price).

Cheers

Gastro = Ghastly.

Exactly, which is putting me off making the journey back up there.

If you want pubs to still be here next year, use them

It's some time since I was last in but I remember it for its food. The ale was decent enough but most people were diners.

ok 👍

that’s decided it for me,

I’ll give it a miss

I had always imagined it might be like the Weighbridge at Alvechurch. Guest beers and pork pies.

I remember I enjoyed Long Itchington for the pubs, I’ll keep it easy and head for there.

Thanks.

How about the Leicester Line? I’ve not been up there.

Is there anything up there that might be a worthy visit?

I got a mate visiting for a few days.
He likes locks and pubs.
So I thought the Cape of Good Hope would have be a good call.

But what if we head the other way and up the Leicester Line?
Is their a boozer of note around Crick?

It’s not necessarily like the Weighbridge (which tbf is relatively unique) but it’s not like the Queens Head or The Boot.

I’d choose the Cape over the Two Boats.

I think it’s the Harvester (?) I enjoyed.

I can’t imagine what’s to enjoy in a Harvester. That’s assuming you mean those chain restaurant type places and not a genuine pub with a similar name.

There’s nothing canalside on the Leicester line unless you take a detour down the Welford arm to the Wharf (IIRC) at the end.

I’ve never ventured into Crick village.

No no no 😂

I didn’t mean the Harvester chain

Shit no.
There’s a great little pub in Long Itchington: keeps odd hours, does food but ain’t gastro, has proper beer and is free house.
I thought that was called the Harvester but could be wrong.

Doesn’t Long Itchington have the highest number of pubs per head of population of any place on the country?

So I guess it’s possible.

I only know the Cuttle and Two Boats, and could maybe include the Blue Lias too as it’s possibly as close to Long Itchington as it is to Stockton.

But I wrong in the name of pub.

The Cape of Good Hope is a good boozer. We have never eaten in the restaurant as we have a dog but have eaten in the bar area. If going that we always stop there. Nice car garage around the corner. Used to make Austin Healey's there and a original worker still restores them there. JML Healeys

Red Lion is the best pubby pub in Crick

Knightly Arms in Yelvertoft is ok as well

There is a pub in Long Itchington called the Harvester nothing to do with the chain it’s just off the green and further down the road is the Green Man. Difficult to find a “proper pub” in rural areas as they all have to rely on the food trade.

It’s a good pub and I wouldn’t personally describe it as a gastro pub.

You can sit and drink decent beer if that’s what you want.

I'd agree. We had a meal and a few drinks in there at the end of August and had a very pleasant evening. It's not at all pretentious and reasonably priced.

And plenty of other local people go there just for the beer, of which there is a good selection.

Have had good and not so good nights in the Cape but not been for a few years now. Used to have good to very good beer but quite expensive. The front bar is almost proper, but with a fruit machine or jukebox or something. Back bar is more eating but still more pub than restaurant. Great location. Give it a go. Can get busy with locals.

Proper boozers are generally found in towns and cities so probably Rugby has one.

What’s wrong with Plan A i.e. The Cape?

Well..if it’s a top boozer then nothing.

But it’s a long haul to go that way, if there’s a better pub then maybe go the  other way?

I could go through Blisworth Tunnel to the Boat?

🤷‍♀️

It’s still got the original bar for drinking?

Proper bit of history to show him.
