  1. Can you connect it to an existing WiFi network, or must it connect via the sim card in the device? What prevents someone from stealing the camera/sim/sd card?
  2. For plugging your WiFi dongle in, mine is on 24/7 when I am onboard.
  3. We're not disagreeing here -- your solution does work best with older gear, which is what you have. But it's not the best solution for newer gear, which is exactly what I said... 😉 "This didn't always used to be the case with older gear, but it is with modern phones/tablets/laptops." Switching bands/SSID (with an older system like yours) works, but does mean that terminals (handsets, tablets, laptops) tend to hang on to the link they have set up for longer as it gets worse, because they have to drop and re-establish the link to hop to another basestation (router/mesh terminal). With a single SSID (and one shared between 2.4G and 5G bands, like most modern routers do -- doesn't need WiFi 6 for this, my 5-year old Plusnet one did it) they're much more willing to switch over seamlessly, and may even run both links in parallel (including MIMO) -- the result is better data rates especially near the switchover point and less chance of a momentary dropout.
  4. Sonoff is what I use both in the caravan and at home. Has an app eWeLink handles 20amps and as a bonus records your power use. SONOFF POW Elite 20A Smart Power Meter Switch, WiFi Wireless Outlet with Power and Energy Monitoring, Control Lights and Appliances from Phone, Manage Energy for DIY Smart Home,Works with Alexa https://amzn.eu/d/2v9l1sX I went for the Sonoff to monitor the caravan power usage on metered sites to make sure I wasn't being ripped. Once I had found out it has programmable on/off used it on the immersion at home. I tried one with a temperature probe but fell down trying to get the programming right 🤔
  5. There's a fourth option: the mobile phone WiFi hotspot. I know that won't be sufficient for many applications, and I fully recognise that MiFi is superior, particularly with an external aerial. However, for casual use such as that stated by the OP, the phone (occasionally in the window) can be the best "bang for buck" solution. With our 2 phones on separate networks I can't remember when we were last unable to stream TV or tether the laptop or tablet. Might be worth seeing if it will do for you @Pete-T before you go to greater expense.
  6. Current plan is to investigate things incrementally, with increasing cost and complexity till we get a decent signal. I believe in the concept of minimum technology to get the job done. As a starter will use the current B310 and have just ordered a Poynting XPOL1 5G. If this is not enough will try a better router and/or a Pointing Omni 600 (or another from that range). Can also try raising aeriel up on a longer pole. We are in an unusual location at the bottom of a steep valley in a moderately remote location, (2 locks down from the Rochdale summit, you will have passed here a little while ago 😀). and an additional factor, I would like wifi throughout the boat, ideally from a single router, and its a 70 foot trad with an engine inside.
  7. If the router needs 12V, it might be as simple as making up a lead with a cigar style plug on one end, and the appropriate plug for the router on the other. No conversion to 230V AC (and back) needed then. In theory you could buy a 12V or USB powered 5G wifi router but they are expensive and it looks like you already have one anyway.
  8. I think everyone likes solar! I have 1kw of panels on the roof and no space for any more. Fridge stays on year round, the first year I was on the boat I turned it off and used the great outdoors and gave myself the worst food poisoning ever. And a fox pissed on my fridge box. These regulators are great for liveaboards without shore power as you can put a huge amount of energy into the battery very quickly. My alternator usually gets switched off around May and solar does everything including charging the starter battery. That's about average I think, if a little on the high side. In winter, cooking with gas, I use around 70-80ah per 24hrs. That's with the fridge running, laptop charging if I'm working from home, wifi router on 24/7, being reasonably careful with power. In summer, the inverter stays on 24/7 and I use my electric kettle, toaster and induction hotplate, usage goes up to around 2 or 3 times that.
  9. McDonalds WIFI is probably one of the worst for this. It requires registering for and if that hasn't happened or there was an issue with authentication then no internet for you even though it will still show as being connected. In fact the above does raise a point which I keep having to make to people. The WIFI signal strength symbol on a device is just that, it is showing the strength of the WIFI signal. The access point could be merrily going about its business without actually being connected to the internet for whatever reason. With modern devices prioritising internet over WIFI rather than cellular in the first instance then your device will merrily keep trying to use the WIFI for internet even though the access point may not be broadcasting it or allowing access to the outside world. Turning WIFI off then forces the device to use cellular data. WIFI is not the internet, it is just a way of connecting to the thing which is connected to the internet. If the thing which is connected to the internet can't or doesn't want you to connect then you won't get access to the internet.
  10. That's not very kind...😉 You may well find a local wifi signal is blasting your signal out..i.e, the pub wifi. If your phone has wifi turned on, turn it off unless you know the local passwords. This often gets a result. I was in a MacDs (🤢) yesterday in the middle of Luton, and couldnt get my internet to work until I turned wifi off. (I was waiting for a flight to arrive and needed a pee as the flight was delayed due to overlong de-icing procedure in Scotland)
  11. Would work on my phone if I had WiFi enabled and mobile data switched off, but not the other way round. I guess the different ISPs involved were using different DNS servers, and one had updated and one hadn't.
  12. We might need two aeriels, a home mooring one and a cruising one, but it would be lovely to have just one. I think the mast is fairly close, need to check again, but the hill gets in the way so signal ok on the towpath side but not as good on this side. There are no steel bulkheads and the engine is a JD3 so not very tall, but just experimenting now and the wifi signal does appear to struggle to get past the engine, maybe its the vertical exhaust that is the issue? I would prefer to avoid extenders if I can as always struggling to keep power consumption down, but its an option. We will be running two mobile contracts, one router and one mifi, plus two phones as backups, but the back cabin is always a diffucult place as it has just one very small porthole. Off to experiment a bit more now.

  14. Hi all - debate ongoing on a Facebook group but interested in thoughts here. What are the options for running a Webasto ThermoTop Evo - with the multi-controller - via a smart control function so it can be turned off and off via mobile phone app when away from the boat? I don't want to use a thermostat, to avoid short-cycling, but want the ability to turn on the Webasto for a solid hour or two when away from the boat. Say, when coming home after some time away etc. There would be wifi onboard and either 12 or 240v. ButlerTechnik tell me the Webasto TCon2 remote app module is the thing - but it's £300 and seems over the top. Google Nest? HeatMiser Neo? Are these options to use - cheaper than £300... How do these other wi-fi enabled products physically get wired into the Webasto control circuit to turn it on?

  16. Apparently the new cable mounts installed at the Marsden end have space for extra services into the tunnel, the idea is they are installing wifi like repeaters all the way through so the chaperones / tunnel control are able to be in contact all the way through. Maybe pushing towards unshadowed passages? For all there is 4/5 tunnel chaperones the shadow van driver needs a different ticket all together.
  17. My Huawei B535 seems to work very well. The only thing I struggle with is mobile calls over WiFi as there's no mobile signal in the area. It works fine with WhatsApp calls but cuts in/out with normal voice calls over WiFi.
  18. A while ago now, when out on the boat, we used to access broadband by putting a dongle inside an CB aerial coil with a magnetic base. See pictures. The dongle had a sim card in it, the other end had a usb connection which plugged into a laptop. Due to advances in telecommunication this no longer works. I have been doing research and all the external aerials I can find require plugging into a router. We don't want that as we only want access to a laptop. The free WiFi reception in the marina where we moor is poor. If too many are accessing it the connection it frequently drops out. Does anyone have a dongle/aerial solution for occasional use, which does what we want? Thank you. ETA we've tried internal aerials but being inside the boat, again reception is poor. We either have to sit in the cratch or in the hatches which is not always convenient.
  19. On both of the boats I have 4G cameras which also create their own wifi hotspot as part of their operation when plugged into 12v supply. £160 for the camera just add a £10 a month data sim. I don't do youtube or other video platforms much at all so others may find this not ideal. Not checked the speed to be honest. Having said that the girls use youtube a lot and when they are on the boat it all seems to work swimmingly. for reference https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/313471752716 I didn't notice when I bought the first one that it had this feature but as with everything else which happens in life it was a pleasant surprise.
  20. Not a tally for a boat but for my caravan but the principals are the same. I have a Victon 75/10 mppt controller and a 110ah battery. My conundrum is what to replace the 45watt panel that feeds it. My brain says 150watt panel as this will never reach full output, being flat on the roof, but will give me more output earlier and later in the day. My wallet says 120watt panel as it's, with vouchers, half the price of the 150watt. Would I notice a difference? It's only running TV, WiFi, LED lights, pumps etc, no fridge as that's on gas when not on EHU. The 45watt panel copes pretty well at present. I really CBA to do an energy audit before someone suggests it.
  21. Hi I have set up for Wifi on my boat which works well, the idea behind this is that occasionally I can work from home on the boat. For this I will need approx. 20GB of data a month. So I ideally want some sort of data package for £10-£15 a month and not go down the route of a contract for £30+ a month. However my company uses a VPN to access the company server and apparently a VPN is not supported by ID mobile, Smarty, 3 (although buying a data sim off 3 did work, a sim and a data pack don't). Has anyone else had this problem? And can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks
  22. Huawei H112-370, its locked to 3 and Smarty. Not the best but I have no excuse to upgrade it. Most of the stuff in the house (TV, Hive, etc) is on ethernet anything that isn't (printers, immersion, solar inverter, Octopus Mini etc) is on a dedicated 2.4ghz network for services only. Leaving the router and two wifi 6 access points on a 5ghz network to cover just phones and tablets. The house is set up so there are no dead spots and the full 5g speed is available everywhere. I could go for FTTP but it's not worth doubling my monthly cost for a lesser (150Mbps) speed. One final point I am about 300metres from my local mast
  23. I have a couple of wireless, battery powered, cameras on the mooring which link to my phone via WiFi. At any time I can open the app and view the camera(s). Those would do for your boat. No wires or issue of where to plug it in. USB rechargeable. You can use them as view only (ie: it doesn't record anything) or you can record to a storage card and/or send the footage to the cloud. for extra security. Using the app you can turn on/off the light that's on the front of the camera and even use it as a walkie-talkie of sorts. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08HHVRM32/ £40
  24. If you are in one place for a while Google location fixes your wifi unit in that place by looking at other nearby signals and it takes a while to update once you have moved. Obviously you have been in one place for a while
  25. OK, so I got a new phone , a Samsung, and I'm trying to link it to my WiFi which is mifi. I know that I have to add a network, don't know if this is Three or Huawei-5D3 and I can't find the bit to enter the key which is the number on the mifi, The guy in the shop emphasised I must do this, but I get to the bit that says add network and it is blank. The password is not admin, if is the eight digit key inside the mifi device. Update .... while randomly looking at my network settings I discovered the chap in the shop had set it to automatic, which seems to be the perfect solution and kind of explains why it has been getting Internet as I have moved around today.
