  6. I know this, but I was poking fun at Peter's bald assertion with no evidence, by responding with more of the same. But you knew this really!

  14. It doesn't really matter what's in the T&Cs, contracts or anything . If there isn't enough money, some canals will close to navigation permanently, rather like they did temporarily last year. You only get what you pay for, and nobody wants to pay for anything - it's always someone else's problem.

  17. Most Beta engines end up with extra tape, cable ties, or other methods to hold the multi pin plug/socket together after one, or more incidents like this. I learnt which bit of the engine to move to make it stop, but it is closer to a whirling house alternator drive belt than I like to be! Why Beta have never changed to a more reliable connector is beyond me. It's the most common weak spot in an otherwise excellent marine package.

  18. Sorry late reply, yeah there the sliding glass in aluminum frames, I think I'm gonna try drill out the pop rivets, as it the only way I can see to get the old glass out and new in, still not sure what material tio use for new windows.

  19. Yes and it beggars belief that CRT give these diesel-electric boats the 'electric boat discount' for being supposedly less polluting.

  23. I do know of a boat that was damaged due to not having a light on the front and bumped by another boat. My own experience was meeting a tug with a light pushing a full length flat with no light that I didn't see. Fortunately the tug driver shouted and I took evasive action (moved over). Subsequent conversation in the pub suggested that I should look down at the water from time to time but I'd been taught to steer in tunnels by watching the illuminated roof.

  24. Parglena didn't have a handrail so water ran down the roof and dripped on the windows so I fitted some angle to prevent it dripping

  26. Yes, i overlooked the obvious cause! A roving band of teenage delinquents with bucket & spade, dismayed at the lack of sand to build castles on their break from education, decided to bail out the canal and build a scale model of the channel tunnel No doubt to the untrained eye this would look like a breach at first glance.

  31. I filled both the engine and the Webasto central heating of my boat with Ford Premium 10 year antifreeze at a 50/50% mix. The radiators refused to get hot unless I heated the radiators with a paint gun first. They then worked normally until the heating went off and they cooled down when I had to repeat the process. I drained the antifreeze and diluted it to a 25% mix and all worked normally, so too strong a mix causes heating issues.

  33. Unusable by whom? If a canoe can go down it, it's by definition navigable. Doesn't have to be a hunk of steel with a heavy chunk of engine in the back. And any agreement would have been with BW, not CRT. And, of course, contract law only works in one direction - try telling your employer they can't change the terms of your contract whenever they like, then watch them laugh when you try it. The majority of lottery funded projects, especially the millennium ones, have closed as money was given purely for capital expenditure with no provision for running costs. The canal restoration societies are, to coin a phrase, in the same boat. As far as the housing thing goes, that's about the only new income stream available to CRT if they can work out how to monetise it.

  39. The van door locks can work but they are not pretty. I always thought of padlocks as 'flags' indicating an unoccupied boat. Also you can get lazy and end up blocking an emergency exit route.

  40. On balance, it is probably better to encourage the opening of the second gate. No one is on top form all the time, and there is more need to protect the equipment than protecting the convenience of not opening the second gate for the boater.

  47. The thing about buying a boat that needs restoration is the initial cost, which maybe is affordable. Even though the complete cost of restoration may exceed the cost of a similar boat in better condition at the outset, the cost of restoration can be stretched out to allow for funds to do it in stages over time. More expensive, but a boat in the hand, nevertheless. Just need to keep the motivation going, to stop it turning into a mill stone.

  48. All J3's are basically the same. Some are petrol start and some are diesel starting. The cylinder heads and intake pipework/starting valve/petrol combustion chamber are different. The direct diesel start heads have a different shaped combustion chamber ( venturi in Kelvin speak) and are scarcer than petrol start heads. There are two sorts of governor. They are interchangeable. The vertical piston one is made in bronze so is prettier if polished up. There are two sorts of water pump. They are interchangeable. The double acting one is probably better for prolonged high power work, but has a leather plunger. Which you have to make. There are two sorts of gearbox. One with lined male cone clutches and the earlier style with metal to metal clutches. There are lots of different magnetos........... N
