  14. I can't speak for others, but if I am in a queue I will walk up to the lock and ask if they want/need help. My problem with volunteers is they don't do that simple thing, they assume I want them to help. If all volunteers asked me if I wanted their assistance I would have no grumble about volunteers whatever.

  15. I am not entirely sure that last bit is true, but it’s not relevant to my point, which was that I don’t understand why people would go boating on canals but want other people to work the locks for them. I am of course not denying that they exist - they most certainly do, and plenty of them - I’m merely saying the I don’t understand it.

  19. Yep, we did it on occasion although we used to leave boat canalside int middle of nowhere sometimes without problem. As WV says in the summer its rarely a problem finding space in a marina for short term. I found the bigger the boat the more places could get us in, spose they would rather 70 foot short term than 40 lol.

  33. I don't think this is the first time you have taken a pop at contributors who really know their subject and try to ensure misleading information is countered. If you have yet to work out who knows what they are talking about and who may not perhaps it would be better to stay quiet. FYI When I worked at a hire fleet the boats started to come out in October to be painted in the open air. The painters never pained after lunch or before they were sure all the dew had gone. Sometimes they messed up and the next morning fund that they had a matt finish. This tells me that Matty is correct. It also seems clear to me that LadyG often posts very questionable advice on all sorts of topics so to prevent misleading others needs putting straight. I don't for a minute think she does it for anything other than the best of motives. As far as I am concerned, yes his opinion does count, and counts far more than anything I have seen from you.

  36. I've also used both electric and hydraulic BTs and don't agree with this. I prefer independent systems. The last thing I'd want to do when handling a big boat at close quarters with other boats or structures is having to slip the engine into neutral and rev it to get enough pressure into a hydraulic system to make the BT work and then quickly slip the engine back to propulsion again so as not to crash into anything. On the other hand, if an electric BT system is properly set up and not overused then there should be plenty of power and no messing around with the main engine revs.

  37. Dread to think how much an Ash pole weighs suitable for a widebeam.

  38. Your advice is getting worse, there is no way you should be putting paint on anywhere near 5 at this time of year. If outside, the painting season has pretty much finished if you want anything other than a rubbish job that has to be corrected next year.

  40. That's ok, it's not designed to go in a fuse panel and the terminals are not exposed.

  41. I agree, although an alternative to consider is to have a weed hatch fitted over or to one side of the impeller if it is on or near the centre line. I have had one boat which had one fitted which was useful for the removal of the occasional plastic bag., but easier, and less costly to fit during the build. With regard to the bow thrust itself, I prefer a hydraulic system which doesn't have some of the running time constraints unlike an electrical one, and it is much quieter. Howard

  46. During our long summer cruises we always found a marina to leave the boat if for a week or so while we went home. Basically look at Nicks and phone around. I guess it would be more difficult in winter when the berth holders would tend to be back.

  48. Or simply use a proper hose. A proper hose will loop across the path giving the cyclists something to consider.
