There is one thing worse than a grumpy old man on a boat. Its a grumpy needy woman on a boat. If you want a generator, phone a hire company, get one delivered and put your hand in your pocket. Job done. Coming on here moaning about being under assisted by the charity will not achieve anything.

Point of Order.... Don't be too hard on these expensive local corner shops. They will be buying their stock at virtually the same price as the likes of Tesco et al flog it direct to the general public, and your perceived overprice will be their gross profit margin. If you begrudge them scratching a living by adding 10p to the price of their beans or 70p to a packet of bacon, then go directly to a Tesco superstore and buy it there. Yes I know that is inconvenient or impossible much of the time, and therein lies the value of overpriced corner shops. Rant over

How old is the boat? I never had a survey of any of my 8 boats, saved me thousands. Ive read many surveys and generaly they are not worth the paper they are written on. More get out clauses than soft Mick. Await incoming.

I suppose it depends on what sort of demands boaters make whether C&RT can be seen to be reasonable or not. If every boater wanted to be connected to power at the drop of a hat I don't think they would be doing much canal maintenance and would have increased electric bills. I have always found that when I made reasonable requests they have been very helpful and I think most boaters find the same. Haggis

Best thing: If I scamper from side to side in the cabin, I can make the boat rock to quite an alarming degree, which makes passers-by wonder what I'm doing in there. Worst thing: When guests don't listen carefully to how the toilet works and create something truly unspeakable. (Thank you covid for giving me a reason to refuse visitors).

How would they have been able to sell the other half of homes that were unaffordable? Seems a very poorly thought out plan.

Many on here and elsewhere have tried to help you, received no thanks and just further complaining and expectations without you bothering to even listen to good advice, do you really wonder why more help isn't forthcoming? You need to learn some humility if you wish for further help.

OK, I can see that asking CRT to use some electric is reasonable. What is their upside if they say yes? They get a warm fuzzy glow from being helpful. They, perhaps, see the stern of a boat they want to move on. Downsides? They have set a precedent. Every boater with a problem that might be helped by mains electricity pitches up at a services and demands power. (CRT and BW before have previously had problems like this at another service facility, where power was being taken without payment or approval- stolen, if you like.) Elf and Safety issues rear their head Public liability issues come into play. If you engaged brain and thought about why you might have got the response you did, before selecting typing mode, it might stop you making a fool of yourself. N

If you are asking contractors to do a job in the middle of nowhere then the absence of a mains electricity supply is foreseeable. You can of course ask the neighbours (including CRT) if they can make a supply available, but you can hardly complain if they can't/won't. The likely need to bring in a generator is surely something that should have been considered in initial discussions with the contractor. Yes it may cost, but boat ownership does. CRT can be sympathetic to your situation, and are are usually flexible in relation to movement requirements when people are genuinely broken down or hemmed in by stoppages. But it isn't their role to get involved in actually solving your problem.

CRT do usually respond in a real emergency, but they do fail sometimes. They should not be providing a free service to cover breakdowns etc as the various boatyards and boat fixers who make a living out of this would be very unhappy. Providing emergency access to electricity (at a service facility?????) is a tricky one. Quite a few boaters (sorry, cheap housing people) would feel that winter itself is an emergency and they should be entitled to plug their boat into CRT electricity and suck out 3kW 24 hours a day.

Bloody Hell!! And people complain about the younger generation acting as if they are entitled! CRT's job is to run the waterways, not provide facilities for you to repair your boat. If you need welding and you can't get your boat to a suitable boatyard, then call out a mobile welder. While some may expect a power supply on site, many can come out with a generator if you arrange this with them in advance. Google and a phone should enable you to find someone local.

Why not insist on connection to the National Grid as part of your licence fee, in fact, to save you hassle running out of gas, get connected to the gas main too, and make sure they change the cooker jets free of charge too. Sheesh.

Not sure why C-RT should provide electricity to a boater because they are broken down long term. It is not their fault you are broken down. Why not hire a Genny to give you power to do your welding ?

If you dont have a heated dock, I would forget it until summer, it will not set, and will bloom overnight with condensation. February is not a good month to paint without heat and humidifier assistance. Look at today's humidity.....doesnt drop below 97 all day

WD 40 is not very good as a releasing fluid. Plusgas is far better.

I know of three boats with stainless tanks which were thin and flexed and split welds. Replacement required the front deck to be removed to replace it. An epoxied integral tank may require treating occasionally, but is a lot less hassle than bodywork modifications to replace a tank or attend to condensation hull corrosion beneath/around a separate tank.
