  2. I kept my data with Yahoo, but they gave away all their customer's usernames and passwords. I kept my data in the Cloud, but Trump decided that China had infiltrated the Cloud and closed it down. I kept my data on an external hard drive, but when my old computer failed, my new one could not be connected to it. I kept my data on my computer, but Apple (or was it Microsoft?) upgraded my software and I could no longer access it. I kept my data on paper under the bed, but when they came to take me away, they wouldn't let me take the bed.

  15. What gives you the right to think that other people should be forced to give out personal details for ongoing data mining by predatory tech companies just so it saves you from having to provide your email address so you can receive what you asked for? Just because you are happy to be ripped off by the said companies does not mean everyone is. I accept that you may not realise just how much you are giving away to such outfits but some of us do. I think your post I quote above shows who really deserves the accolade you gave Alan.

  17. The idea (that I read) was to use excess electric, (for which we are currently paying the generating companies to switch off when not needed), and produce the EFuels at periods of minimum domestic and industrail demand (overnight was suggested) that means that the energy used (even tho very inefficient) is, to all intents and purposes, 'free' so it doesn't matter it uses 2x or 3x the power that conventional diesel production uses.

  19. Or even simpler, commission a hull-only survey and try to pass that off as all the buyer needs because you know the hull's about the only aspect of the boat that isn't in trouble. Also, I found a fair bit of the value of the survey was talking to the surveyor about what remedial work he would and wouldn't expect to be carried out by the vendor, why he'd made the optional recommendations and other things he'd noted about the boat but not written down.

  24. Although much has been said about the power required for moving, no mention of hot water for showers and cooking. These can easily be the same as the movements daily power consumption, currently can be supplied by gas but that too is a fossil fuel, add in space heating in winter and you are now using massive amounts of gas. Generating heat is a much bigger use of energy on a boat than moving. even in summer.

  28. I would imagine they're going to fill in all the canals soon anyway because most of the people involved in building them were also involved in the slave trade, or didn't ensure their work force was multi ethnic. We can't possibly use something that is that racist - can we?

  34. There seems to be very many using the Rivers to gate from Canal A to Canal B The River Trent seems to be a major thoroughfare for NB's and there are certainly 'gaps' in excess of 10 miles between locks &/or marinas as you get downstream of Nottingham

  36. I'm fairly sure that some manufacturers make extensive use of a hefty "surface charge" to boost their claimed capacity figures.

  38. Exactly, and there is not much spare capacity in most of the local distribution networks, so even if there is a close electrical supply nearby, pehaps feeding a village, the cables and substation (and possibly those that feed it) may require upgrading. This is already becoming a costly headache for capacity planners trying to plan for a greater uptake of EV's. The local HV to a town or village is usually 3 phase 11,000 volts, transformed down to 415 volts three phase, with domestic premises and light industrial being supplied at 230 volts from a single phase. To get to 11kV from 133kV requires three substations (133kV/66kV, 66kV/33kV, 33kV/11kV), all of which may need replacing, along with the cables between them. Someone is going to have to pay for this. The Government will probably chip in to cover part of the infrastructure upgrades needed for EVs to encourage take up, but I can't see them subsidising the cost for electric boats, so I think it will the boaters who pay via vastly increased licence fees. I can see a vicious circle developing where the increased cost discourages boaters, forcing CRT to further increase licence fees, until it ultimately causes closure of the network.

  48. I’d get it covered with Vactan, keep it out of the water until March/April, and see how it looks. If bits have rusted again, localised Vactan, the 3 coats of blacking, plus a 4th coat at the waterline.

  49. Ah, ok. I seem to recall you having a pop at my lack of IT skills some time ago. That’s fine with me, the present sits uneasily with this old fart at times, a condition that has existed since my youth in the 60s when I first discovered canals. My early experiences were entered around working boats, ex working boats or similar style craft and LTC Rolt’s Narrow Boat struck a chord regarding old school craftsmanship which echoes, albeit, dimly, to this day. Since the early 80s I’ve practised my trade of traditional style signwriting and boat decoration, proud to have worked with some of the best respected names in the business in old style boatbuilding.and I’ve little interest, if any, in the contemporary liveries that grace some modern craft, though I sometimes admire the technical skills of the painters that produce them. There is nothing pretentious, or crappy, about maintaining a tradition that I grew to love as a young man, though I understand that it may be difficult for a modern boater without that background to comprehend. The present day ethos exhibited by many is little to my liking, my contemporaries and I had the better times. I still enjoy the job I do, though I’m circumspect about those I take on these days. No wine glass clutching frogs will ever dance down a cabin side painted by me....or those in buckets either. Hi Mark. Yes, varnish will hold back fade, indefinitely if reapplied. I wrote a boat 30 odd years ago that’s been varnished, still looking good.
