  4. I never leave a boat in a lock going up or down without anyone at the paddles. If the boat hooks up the steerer cant do anything

  6. In no way trying to start a competition but I got the impression the OP took exception to me saying he probably does not know the engine model and engine number - both of which he will need if he needs spares. I just feel sorry for him on so many levels.

  9. If you buy your wood from B&Q it's all bent. Just need to select one with the right bend.

  11. Indeed. Different boats, even of similar lengths can behave very differently. After two 58 foot shareboats, both of which were happy to stay close to the bottom gates when going up, we bought a 60 foot boat which behaved very differently. On the fiercer uphill locks, like Deptmore Lock and most of the T&M locks, it is pulled very strongly forward, sometimes hitting the gates even in reverse with with full revs. I had to quickly adapt my uphill technique and rest the front fender on the gate in uphill locks.

  19. No nastiness that I saw. Simply frustration with you not answering simple questions, leaving us all to guess. Perhaps we shouldn't have bothered, seeing as you can't be bothered to help yourself.

  21. And how much does it cost for someone to respond to them, maybe wasting some of the limited funds available that could be better spent on dredging or repairing a bit of infrastructure.

  25. I must be thick or something. I was not aware that Listers had an idler gear in the cam shaft drive so the camshaft will go the opposite way to the crankshaft - do they use an idler

  31. Usually a LPW3 engine sits below the cabin floor of a trad, below the decking in a semi trad or a cruiser stern, not yet seen one in its dedicated engine 'ole (room) as a "chug chug" engine would be. A "chug chug" engine would possibly be too physically large to put in direct place of the LPWS3 without a massive financial outlay, making the space a dedicated engine room, 3rd picture. Cheaper to install one of these? https://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/a7923/the-rise-of-the-fake-engine-roar-11291754/

  36. Quite a lot of Paddle boards on the Wey now. Trouble is they have no idea even on which side to pass you. They were occupying both landing stages below one lock we came to and when you approach they have no idea what to do. More concerning is the wild swimming on the Basingstoke, and with it being overgrown, narrow and shaded in places they can be difficult to spot. They don't realise they can be sucked under if you don't spot them in time.

  39. No one has mentioned it yet, so I will. If you normally boat with side fenders down, take them off. Personally I breathe a sigh of relief when I get in to narrow lock territory. Much easier to work if you aren't travelling with another narrowboat than wide locks. Jen

  47. They did use the S3L2 in their T75 model, but the smaller ones were L series. A secondhand mower engine (as already mentioned) is likely to be the cheapest option. A nice picture of the broken engine would be nice....

  50. Why not? If jo public told me to F off for requesting they comply with a regulation, it would become public. Just because forum membership is involved makes not a jot of difference.
