Thanks to all for the offers of help, I’ve managed to have sight of the review now. The lads at CTS and myself reckoned that the finished boat was so vivid that a commemorative beer called Swandazzler should have been brewed to celebrate the completion. Truly, it was a marathon!

I think it needs to be fitted to the offside of the A45 bridge in Braunston, Bridge 90, to stop any more widebeams travelling the N Oxford.

Thanks John. It did go on a bit, unlike the Brum Boat jobs you recall...in and out in a few hours. This was about an intermittent 7 months. I’d do a bit, then others had to do their bit, and so on. Probably the most intricate job to date. Cheers! D

Well that takes me back! Last time I used a sun compass was in Antarctica when I was surveying the uncharted Balleny Islands in the Ross Sea. The South Magnetic Pole was only two hundred miles away so the steering compass spun in lazy circles. Mostly we used the GPS but the sun compass was our fall back navigational tool. I agree that mostly the Wash crossing is a visual pilotage exercise although there is a lack of useful landmarks when you are out in the middle. We left Wisbech at 0200 so it was dark until we cleared the Nene. In some ways that makes it easier as the buoys and beacons are much easier to identify by their flashing sequences.

The moorings below Sunbury were squatted for a number of years after which time the EA put in an adverse possession claim as default land owners. The boaters who had been there for 10+ years then put in their own claim and fenced off their individual "plots". Interesting situation. I can't really see how the boaters could be allowed to effectively acquire the land for nothing but you never know !! There are some houses further down the owners of which had built jetties to moor boats prior to the squatter boats arriving on the same reach, and these house owners now have the EA attempting to claim ownership of the Riverside land they have built their jetties on. Public footpath seems to explain the non ownership of the actual river bank plus the fact it's not particularly well set up for mooring.

If anyone needs a side mounting fender eye, I left one in Hurleston bottom lock. Just needs finding and welding on.

That's gonna be really difficult on The Thames. Firstly towpath moorings longer than 24hrs are pretty rare, and secondly any boat in a bit of a state hanging around for more than a few days is gonna have the busibodies and the authorities on it in a flash. My own view is Jack would be best off getting a personal loan and topping his £3k up to about £10k, and buying that Highbridge discussed in several threads here. I would say the key is John's last line, do you want to sell yourself to Apple or Google. Once you have made that decision then look at either an iPhone (Apple) or Android (Google). For Android there are lots of makes and models from relatively cheap to iPhone comparable expensive. I use a Moto phone (Android) as I dislike Apple and don't wish to use any of their products although through work I have had to use iPhones and iPads. I wouldn't say either Apple or Android are any easier or harder to get used to, both have their ways of doing things and some are easier on one platform than the other.
