Silicon Sealent - that does not go mouldy

Several brands of silicone sealant are advertised as being resistant to mould and mildew.

Unfortunately they are not proof against moulds under all conditions and do not perform so well when there is moisture constantly present.

I have had a lot of success in preventing blackening of the seals by using a shower cleaning spray after every shower.

You could also try regularly wiping the sealant with a weak bleach solution which will kill the mould spores.

I don't think there are any anti mould sealants out there that are 100% mould free but generally the more expensive the sealant the better the anti-mould properties. According to my tame plumber the trick is good ventilation - condensation is the main culprit. A good free draining sanitary design and careful sculpting of the seal to avoid water traps (corners for example) to avoid sitting water will also prevent the problem.

also if haven't already fitted one, a time controlled shower fan is a good move.

Is it "Dow Corning 785" that most building forums etc recommend?

To be hones through, I find you just have to keep on top of it with HG Mould Spray, and replaced every five years.

Its not a huge job. 2hours say?
