tree monkey Posted December 5, 2024 Report Posted December 5, 2024 Take care over the next few days everyone, check for local forcast, fairly high winds forecast, tie stuff down and try to avoid mooring under trees. 2
system 4-50 Posted December 5, 2024 Report Posted December 5, 2024 The chap who died when a tree fell on his car a few days ago did so just ~2 miles from where I live, on a road I use regularly. 1

I hadn't heard of that, could you provide a link to the news story please. I work in the industry, my main role is identifying hazardous trees and in all honesty the above is my worst nightmare, I came close over 10 yrs ago when an Oak I claimed as safe shed a limb 6 months later. To add a bit of sanity. It is very very rare for trees to cause serious issues notwithstanding the occasional high profile news stories, just take sensible precautions Edited December 5, 2024 by tree monkey 2

matty40s Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 Main problem tonight and tommorow is the wind will mainly be coming from the North or NW, for a long period of time. Some very worrying forecasts for SW and for Wales. Channel Islands also in peril. 2

Naughty Cal Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 Perfect weather for a weekend out in the van on a site at the top of a hill Still it will be dry and warm in the bar
GUMPY Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 Overnight tonight looks to be the worst down here, West Wales will get hit worse than down here in Devon. It's only 75mph forecast here🤔 https://app.weatherandradar.co.uk/U13Q/enGBShare Don't worry it will be up country before lunchtime 😱
Tonka Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 Canceling loads of events here because of the Amber weather alert. Cancelled the school fair
blackrose Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 They're calling this one Storm Dara O' Briain.

As usual it's actually beautiful, calm and sunny at the moment a typical lull before the storm.
matty40s Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 Red warnings just gone out, I think Cornwall and Devon N Coast will go under red shortly. 1
Rob-M Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 The red zone just touches us at home, probably another new fence on the way.
Alan de Enfield Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 (edited) Looks like our boat is going to be getting a bit of wind on Saturday morning (Anglesey) Edited December 6, 2024 by Alan de Enfield 1
Jen-in-Wellies Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 On the plus side, if you don't own a trampoline, there is a good chance you'll receive one before the end of the weekend. If you already own a trampoline, go for one last bounce today. 4
magnetman Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 I'm hoping for my beech tree to fall down so I can return to the mooring in the spring. It has been moving a bit so I got the Boat away. Land owner is planning to have it felled but I think nature might sort it out. Loads of giganteus fungus on the roots and its only a few feet from the edge with undercutting. It would be unideal for it to come down onto the Boat. My boat (in the picture) is now elsewhere.
Tam & Di Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 This morning's news headline said Red Wind Warning, which I misread as Red Wine Warning. Now that really IS serious 🍷😟 1 1

MoominPapa Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 Orange warning here in Wicklow. I have told the house inverter to keep the batteries fully charged at all times, in anticipation of the power failing. We're out at the first event of Christmas this evenng, anticipating leaving that fairly early to avoid the strongest winds after midnight. MP.

No inverter yet, so I've filled the paraffin lamps and am charging the power bank and touches. Just had a walk around and weighed light stuff down with heavy stuff and tied the bin to the wall

The house has a water well, so that's OK, but I feel better to have an independent electricity supply and fuel for the stove, even if a grid connection is quite the luxury most of the time.
GUMPY Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 After a massive administrative error last night the battery was empty this morning, I grabbed some expensive electrons earlier hopefully enough to get through until it goes cheap again just after Midnight. Luckily all power lines are underground round here. Just waiting to see what tomorrows rates will be. 1
magnetman Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 I tied down the solar panels on top of the Boat. To be fair its not getting windy here but I have previously experienced a rather traumatic solar panel disengagement outcome which narrowly missed causing severe injury to others. These days I take the view that large pieces of glass with sharp aluminium surrounds want securing during bad weather. 2

Similar, the additional solar and batteries are going on next year, we are also on a well but unfortunate that needs electricity for the pump, got bottled as a back up, coal stocked and a winters worth of firewood in the store, funnily enough just got in from cutting and stacking the winter after next firewood, I've got a load of Ash for next winter still to be processed
