Can anyone in the marina spare literally a couple of minutes to do a small favour for me? If so, please PM me... πŸ˜‰Β

Β

No replies then.Β All those posters on CWDF who routinely slag off Facebook probably don't want to hear that within a couple of hours of making a similar request on there someone helped me out, and will get a beer in return for a couple of minutes of their time... πŸ˜‰Β

Perhaps, like me lots of folk on here have you on ignore because they don't like you because of comments you have made in the past?

That'll balance out the ones I have on ignore for the same reason, then... πŸ˜‰Β

Β

At least I try and make helpful or informative posts that are backed by facts rather than calling other posters names or making personal attacks on them, unlike some other posters who simply don't like being contradicted and *hate* it when they're shown to be wrong... πŸ˜‰Β

It may just be none of us are there. You get a lot more people on FB than are on here. It's horses for courses, really. I'd trust advice on here more than I would there.

Β

I'm pretty sure there are quite a few people on CWDF who also use Facebook, but don't reveal the fact because this then inevitably sparks posts -- usually from from the same few people -- about how rubbish it is and how stupid they are to use it.

Β

I know they're not all active (same as Facebook) but CWDF has more than twice as many members as the FB group I posted to.

Β

I'd certainly trust CWDF more for advice, though it would be better if some posters offering it didn't then spend quite so much time telling other people how stupid they are... πŸ˜‰Β

You are very fond of asking for details / proof when someone disagrees with you - so do you have a list of CWDF members who moor at Great Heywood, and how many of them read your request on here and had a few spare minutes to assist?

And we're on their boat at the time of the request, as I wasn't I didn't bother to respond as I couldn't help out.

He's probably got you on ignore because you hurt his feelings some time or other. He can't see this post either as I scare him shitless 🀣 the poor little lamb.

Facebook is pretty useless these days for its original purpose, which was to keep in touch with family and friends. So few use it now for that, the groups and pages are about all that keeps it going, and now FB has decreed it can put ads on pages too, I suspect they'll fade out pretty soon.

The groups are weird - I got kicked off Narrowboat Owners Group for mentioning there was a mooring going at the farm, advertising,Β  apparently, though the mates of the guy who runs it seem to happily sell their boats on it.

The other thing about FB users is that they check it 50 times a day on average. We tend not to.

I was opposite almost, but you can't get in from the canal other than on a boatΒ

Seems to me a long winded way to go about it. Why not just ring the marina up and get them to sort out the problem.Β

Because there aren't that many staff there and they're often busy, it's quite a long walk from the office (leaving it unattended) right round to the far end of the marina where my boat is, and unimportant non-urgent requests like mine often get forgotten when something else more urgent takes over their attention -- that's just the way things work.7

Β

A boater on the same pontoon a few yards away helpfully spent a minute or so going to my boat, problem solved πŸ™‚

Β

If nobody had replied then I'd have phoned the marina, but this wasn't needed in the end.

I was hoping there would be somebody on CWDF but it seems not -- whether there was nobody there or they didn't reply, the end effect was the same, which is why I resorted to Facebook.

Β I imagine if anyone on here was at your Marina and read your post they would have helped. Well at least I hope they would have, as comments on here and grudges shouldn’t be carried over in the real world of boating if any member needs help and you can help.

I would hope so too, but some people seem more interested in holding grudges, making digs and point-scoring than being helpful -- like so often on CWDF, unfortunately. I had a prediction of which particular posters would reply to my post -- as so often -- by digging at me (or approving such posts) instead of just commenting or being helpful, and it proved to be sadly correct... 😞

Does your marina not have it's own Facebook group for moorers? Ours does and can be quite useful.

I should have thought of that, I'll check -- thanks for the suggestion πŸ™‚

Depends what his problem was, but the staff at marina are ok, I’m sure they’d have helped.Β
Β

Β

Tiny problem -- I'd left the rear doors of the semi-trad open after greasing the nipples on the hinges, I was worried they'd bang open and closed in the wind. Just needed closing and the bolt dropping...

Β

I'm sure the marina staff would have helped -- perhaps after being prodded to remind them -- but it's a long way round for them as opposed to (as it turned out) a boat a few yards away on the same pontoon πŸ™‚Β

Β

Turns out there is a Great Haywood Marina FB page, but it only seems to have publicity posts by the marina on it -- don't know if I could have posted there, or how many boaters there read it...

Β

(and the same for the Lakeland Leisure Marinas page that they've now moved to...)

Some do... πŸ˜‰Β

Β

Which is why I gave it a couple of days before resorting to Facebook, where I got a helpful reply in a couple of hours.

Β

Which if nothing else shows that FB is not as pathetic and useless as some people here keep on claiming. Like CART, really... πŸ˜‰Β

Intriguing. I always get the impression there are about 30 boaters confident enough routinely to post on here (of whom maybe one or two moor in GH), while traffic on FB runs into the thousands with several hundred willing to post. So its no great surprise you got a response on FB but not on here.

Β

I wasn't that surprised either, as you say there are an awful lot of registered users on CWDF who rarely or never look at it and post even less often.

Β

I was just pointing out that the superior anti-Facebook attitude often put forward by those who do post on CWDF ("it's useless drivel, full of adverts and thickos not real boaters, I wouldn't use it if you paid me") wasn't borne out here, where FB delivered and CWDF didn't. Maybe one clue for the reason could be in the name of the FB group I posted in ("The Friendly Narrowboat And Waterways Group"), given the number of times that people on CWDF -- including me! -- have complained about how unfriendly it can be, especially to newbies... πŸ˜‰Β

Yes this attitude pishes me off too as it is so juvenile. FaceBook is the medium for discussion and yes there is junk on there, and there is solid gold too depending on the group and on the individual author you are reading. Its rather like condemning the Invision forum software for the shyte posts on here, or saying the Royal Mail service is rubbish because they keep delivering junkmail.Β

What gets me is if I mention something on here I have seen on Facebook the number of shouts " I can't see that"

Though maybe not as annoying as people who read stuff -- usually right-wing, often biased -- hidden behind a paywall, and then post links to it to justify their case... πŸ˜‰Β

Β

If people don't want to join Facebook (which is free, because don't forget that *you're* the product...) then that's their choice, they're missing out on some useful/informative stuff as well as the drivel and ads. But if they make that choice, they can't really complain when others point out they've found something useful on there.

Β

Facebook is a bit like metal-detecting, those who spend time and effort sifting through all the dirt do sometimes find rewards -- but people who disparage metal detecting as a hobby for nerds can't then go "Hey, you found a gold coin, why didn't I get one?"... πŸ˜‰Β

Β

It does seem perverse to post a link to private FB content without any description of what it says or is about.Β
