Finally shroppie fly comes good

Featured Posts

The guys running it now are making a very good job of it and hopefully they continue.

But canal folk always seem to be hung up about this place, what makes it so special? Taking Audlem pubs, there have been times when both the Bridge & the Lord Combermere have arguably held the status as the best pub in the village, as has the Shroppie Fly, but the former two don't get hyped like this one does. It isn't a long-standing canal pub (converted to a pub in 1974) and at least within the last 30 years it's never really been exceptional on beer, food or value for money. The narrowboat bar is good and quirky, but the Kings Lock at Middlewich also has a narrowboat bar, yet this feature isn't anywhere near as well known compared with at the Fly.

The Anchor at High Offley also gets a lot of hype for different reasons. I'm not struck on the place but you can see why it's revered by people who like this kind of pub, as it does the 'old boatman's pub' act very well, but the Shroppie Fly has never really specialised in anything to the same extent

Like the Greyhound, its bang on the waterfront. Also the name is massively evocative of old canal carrying ways.

Many pubs right on the waterfront, on the Shropshire Union alone there is the Barbridge Inn, Junction Inn, Shady Oak, Wharf Tavern at Goldstone. The Greyhound has a lot more history behind it, being a well-known stop in the working era.

It's a quirky name, but I doubt there are many people who aren't well read in canal history who know what it means. If the pub was renamed the 'Wharf Inn' or 'the Red Lion' would it lose much of its popularity regardless of what was on offer inside?

Or you could have a look at my 6 years of Pub Cruise posts in which I visited, commented on and scored several hundred pubs on many waterways.  It may be a bit out of date now, but the Shroppie Fly must be in there somewhere.  The link is to the last, 2019 Pub Cruise and has links to all the rest.

I've often read your pub cruise postings, and very useful they are too 🙂

But like any pub guide they're only useful if the pub is unchanged with the same management, and that's increasingly rare nowadays with the financial problems of many pubs, especially the wet-led boozers that many boaters like.

All pub/beer guides go out of date quickly in many cases, so I always look for recent online reviews to confirm they're still good. The same would apply to any CWDF postings, pubs need regular confirmation that they are still good -- or improved, in cases like the Shroppie Fly.

Yes,as my posts were from 2014 to 2019, perhaps they should be moved to the History and Heritage section!

Cheers,

interesting to see the Shroppie Fly and the Anchor get a mention in the first few posts,

I’ll read though at some point to see which pubs I’ve missed and am yet to visit

Shroppie Fly another must stop place now. Food was excellent and a good range of beers. Landlord, Black Sheep, Shropshire Gold and Ghost Ship - I had a few of those and in tip top condition.
