Looking for advice re safe moorings going through Birmingham tomorrow. Travelling from Catherine de Barnes on the GU. Initial thinking is Star City, but could do with a few alternatives please.

We are doing the Warwickshire ring and will be turning right at Salford Junction.

TIA

Paul.

From Catherine de Barnes it would be Star City if you don't want to go up Farmers Bridge for an evening in Birmingham. After that we usually go to Curdworth or Fazeley.

If you are just going the “pure” Warwickshire ring and not going into Birmingham then I would go from CdeB to the Cuttle Bridge Inn at Curdworth in one day, there is no real need to stop anywhere between unless you want to, in which case Star City would be the place.

You wont really be going through Birmingham which I always feel is a great shame when people "do the ring" I spoke to a boater at Curdworth who was "doing the ring" and said how disappointed they were with Birmingham

The Boat at Minworth is a little closer and fine for overnight. They weren't doing food when we stopped there a few weeks ago, but the next pub along the road/towpath was - a couple of hundred yards.

I suppose the Minworth services are still boarded up?

Time is against us to go into Brum this trip. It is something we want to do at some point though. We are hoping we can get into Coventry if time permits.

Talking with another boater who uses this stretch quite often and he has also recommended the Dog and Doublet. Thanks.

The dog and doublet is indeed a great pub.  It depends on how long a day you want to do if you want to get there in one hop from CdeB.

Book, ?? Never had to book Coventry basin before, is this something to do with Culture?

Yep and most of what we found there was the Trustees of Canal & River Trust meeting in a building at the basin

When they broke up and came out, the moment wasn't wasted!

Yes, during the City of Culture  you have to book the basin (for free). You don’t have to book the approach to the basin .

Do they check up on you before accepting your booking to see if you are cultured enough. Can you convince them that the plaster flying ducks on the cabin wall of your boat are retro and meant ironically?
