  2. Well that answered my question! Carrie~Lou won't be stretched - at least not in the near future and certainly not by us. Subject to survey she will be under new ownership very soon with a lovely couple who have hired boats loads of time but want their own boat. I hope they will have as many happy times in her as we have had. Now we just have to get boatyards, surveyors and planets aligned for both them and us to progress with our boat buying plans Exciting times

  5. Ooh, that's an interesting take on doing reviews! Could you buy lots of other things and tell us you haven't used them?

  6. I am inclined to doubt this. Everything Socrates wrote was Greek to me.

  7. We settled that one centuries ago. There is a very good reason the Tudor Rose has more red petals than white petals ...

  8. When I sold my boat I provided a paper trail including original invoice, insurance docs, EA registration invoices for all extras bought for the boat and work done, all bearing my name this backed up by proof of ID by way of passport, driving licence etc etc. Fairly positive proof I thought Phil

  25. I would like to say avery big thank you to all that have given me the benefit of their experience in relation to my dilema. I may need to rethink my dream of cruising the waterways in the short term, (And to those who queried it I do mean cruising in the true sense). But hopefully it wont be too long before I get out there and get to meet some of you in person. Happy cruising to you all. Pengie

  26. Socrates was tried for and found guilty of corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens, so all the things he was complaining about were clearly his fault! Jen ?

  32. So was it a fulty battery or was it the 'unconventional' wiring that caused the battery to fail? A bit unfair on the battery maker if the latter was the case. At 28+ Kg I would expect them to have more capacity than the more usual 23kg; I understand the AHr figure can be fudged by the way it is measured which might be why the ebay batteries can claim to be 130AHr when their size and weight is normal for 110AHr.

  35. Oi! Some of us on here regularly go on the lash in Liverpool and end up in a ditch near Wigan ... that's pretty much a summary of the Western end of the Leeds-Liverpool

  38. Apparently the source is a little more recent that that : Quote Investigator: The quote is so entertaining and it fills its niche so well that it is cited repeatedly around the globe. Over the decades the quotation or a close variant has appeared in newspapers such as: Oakland Tribune of California in 1922; The Bee of Danville, Virginia in 1946; Winnipeg Free Press of Manitoba, Canada in 1976; The Sunday Herald of Chicago, Illinois in 1982; the Sun-Herald of Sydney, Australia in 2005; and the Taipei Times of Taiwan in 2008 [SOC1-SOC6]. The words are usually attributed to Socrates and the confusion with Plato is understandable because Plato’s dialogues are the primary source of knowledge concerning Socrates. QI has determined that the author of the quote is not someone famous or ancient. It was crafted by a student, Kenneth John Freeman, for his Cambridge dissertation published in 1907. Freeman did not claim that the passage under analysis was a direct quotation of anyone; instead, he was presenting his own summary of the complaints directed against young people in ancient times. The words he used were later slightly altered to yield the modern version. In fact, more than one section of his thesis has been excerpted and then attributed classical luminaries.

  40. I appreciate that it's not equivalent to a 'bare metal' job, and we've had to leave it to Robert to judge what's adequate in terms of rust treatment etc. At the end of the day we thought a bare-metal repaint costing 3 or 4 times as much would have been overkill for a boat that is 'only' 15 years old and with existing paintwork in very fair condition; the money we saved has probably paid for zinc spraying and epoxy blacking an the hull plus new double glazing throughout (the fitting of which itself included treatment/glossing of any rusty areas round the window openings). Robert acknowledged himself that the roof will be the first to go, and left us most of a tin of Dacrylate for when it's needed. For now it's had 5 coats and sanded areas, so we'll see how it goes. Just to be clear, when you talk about the conditions Robert 'agrees' to work under, those conditions have been 100% dictated by himself: we booked his first-choice facility for as long as he said he needed it, plus an extra day just in case. If he'd asked for two weeks, that would have been fine by us.

  42. To add some balance, pretty much ANY boat put up here for pre-purchase analysis gets ripped to bits, even the screaming bargains. If you answer the questions asked of you in the thread, you'll get far better focussed advice, for both this boat and any future boat you ask for comments on, as we will get a better feel for what you want and what will suit you well.

  45. You would think so. Practically, I've had little success using that method. In my post above, I purposely didn't mention heat because the diy mechanic is less likely to have access to useful heat. If you run an engine, everything will come up to temperature at about the same rate, whereas what's needed is for the nut to expand much quicker in order to release its hold on the stud. A fine welding tip played onto the nut, bringing it quickly up to red, while the stud stays black would be ideal.

  49. Yes. If you are not scared off by the boat, then good luck and we will help as much as we can with advice and suggestions. If you are intending to take the urine from day one, then those of us who get grief from CRT for being genuine continuous cruisers will be quite unfriendly! We have done over 400 miles and 400 locks so far this year. If you want to stay both sides of one bridge every fortnight then stuff you. If you genuinely want to boat then welcome to the community, and we will help you as much as we can.

  50. Thanks, will give them a try. Not for any kind of project or anything, just always been intrigued about when the lock furniture changed on specific locks; mainly gate paddles being removed from the Llangollen locks, the current modern paddle gear replacing the old on both canals, steel gates replacing wooden ones... So it's the 60s/70s/80s era to be more precise. I like the quirkier aspects of the canal!
