  1. Another new poster probably put off of posting again by the warm welcome he or she has received ,it,s just a question with no malice intended so why can,t people just answer if they know or say hello if they don't instead of the knit picking that seems to follow every newbie question ,just a suggestion I,ll get me coat

  2. Can Joelsanders be given the freedom to draw our attention to his blog posts? I know I can subscribe to his blog but there is often an interesting discussion on CWDF when he draws our attention to his musings (if you discount the whingings of the usual suspects that is!) Joel himself seems ready to engage constructively with any critisism of his posts, his opinions or the way he interacts with others and that makes for a much more interesting discussion than the all too frequent dogma of so many threads. Those who have complained about him and dont wish to engage could simply ignore him.

  3. Unencumbered by the knowledge of who moors where and who is who on the forum, the o/p makes a good point. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes is needed.

  4. Last autumn there was a 3 hr delay in starting down Curdworth locks in the morning because the long pound (1/2 mile or so) between the top and next locks was about 2' down. It transpired someone had left the gate open and one paddle was stuck slightly up due to debris, so water had been slowly flowing through that lock all night. It took about an hour with all paddles up on the top lock to vaguely get the level up and even then I ran aground and was stuck in the centre of the channel for a while - fortunately CRT continued to run water down after I had passed through and eventually I floated off. This is the sort of grief that is caused by selfish folk who can't be bothered to close gates. If the locks were perfectly maintained and debris-free it wouldn't matter, but they aren't and so it does.

  5. Hi just had a newsletter from the marina we are in and they reported "The Volunteer Group which worked with CRT had put in a large number of whips beside the towpath." But despite google etc I can't find out what whips are (would be good if it was the political types but clearly not) Please let me know if you can and is this an idiom specific to the Midlands? Or am I, as usual showing, how much lack of knowledge I have in public?

  6. Hi all, Saw yesterday a mostly burnt out shell just before top lock on the Hatton flight tied up on the long term moorings. Just wondering how it got like it, accident, arson, unknown etc and how long its been sitting there, being nosey. It was tied up next to a works boat full of old shopping trollies and other junk, making a nice stretch look a bit tardy. Incidentally, most of the boats of the mooring have seen better days, not a great advert Just interested, anyway Hatton looked good yesterday, well kept and plenty of people, just need a few more boats and more sunshine!!

  7. To be honest I find his posts contrived, tedious, and boring, I don't read them.

  9. Just a couple of observations. If has been suggested the OP isn't a boater, their opinion (rude or not) is IMO important. For the canals to survive for many more decades, cash other than boaters cash has to be attracted into CRT. If a non boater thinks scruffy boats are a poor advert for the canals, and assuming it is a view held by a fair proportion of the population, then it isn't guaranteed to help with the finances, I can see a time in the future when such things as the number of boats which, shall we say don't enhance the visual appeal of the canal is important. Fair enough if boaters are able/willing to finance the canals without outside help we don't need to consider the impression our boating gives to others. If on the other hand boaters aren't able/willing to carry such a burden what others think of the canals and the boats on it is going to be increasingly important.

  10. With the benefit of hindsight, when we had a new engine and 2:1 PRM 150 I wish we'd forked out £500 and replaced it with a 3:1, our first slower revving prop was much sweeter.

  11. A word of advice, get to know who moors where and circumstances before critising boats on moorings. Some may even be forum members.

  12. Nigel can I ask something. While I know you are a very clever bloke I wondered what your agenda was, I really have not the time at the moment to read big legal posts, may have got this wrong but it seems your saying that Pillings need not pay the NAA. Whilst these loopholes, get outs or whatever you want to call them, how is CaRT going to be able to keep our canals in a navigable state when instead they have to pursue people through the courts to get a business to pay a known charge for or someone mooring for to long.. I do realize that sometimes someone's need does need fighting for especially against large companies, but true fully CaRT needs to be self sufficient quite soon. I do not want moorers blocked in a marina absolutely awful position to be in, but at the same time I do not want to see private companies ripping off our money.

  13. Quote: On 31 July 2013 a Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) surveyor saw 'Leo' being operated with 13 passengers on board and the company was spoken to. 'Sam' was filmed operating with 13 passengers on board on 2 August 2013 while under the control of Mr Clarke. Unquote To give a little balance to this posting though it should be said that Dalesman (the OP) is linked to (possibly related to) the proprietor of Pennine Boat Trips who operate from the adjoining stretch of quay. I understand that there is some animosity and lack of co-operation between the two companies particularly aimed from Pennine Boat Trips towards Ian Clarke of Pennine Cruisers. I have also been told that Pennine Boat Trips actually employed someone to do the filming of the offence and did the reporting to the MCA although I have no proof of those statements. Under those circumstances I find it a bit sad that a neighbouring company posts about the misfortune of their neighbours particularly as Mr Clarke made no attempt to deny the MCA offence. Just for balance though. Roger

  14. Well I managed to get a copy of the Register via another route, so I still don't understand the message re: no records! Title Plan has to be applied for by post [which I've done, but they take ages]. All incumbrances have to be entered into the title record, and this has in fact been done. There are 20 car parking space leases entered under "Schedule of notices of leases". All for 30 year terms starting from various dates from 1 September 2007 to 21 July 2008. An interesting assortment of incumbrances/rights listed under the Charges Register also, one of which I've sent off for. The standard items which have been referred to already are: 5 (16.04.2007) REGISTERED CHARGE dated 16 March 2007. 6 (16.04.2007) Proprietor: MATTHEW STEADMAN of 34 Morden Road, Blackheath, London SE3 0AA. 7 (20.12.2007) The parts of the land affected thereby are subject to the leases set out in the schedule of leases hereto. The leases grant and reserve easements as therein mentioned. 8 (23.01.2008) The land is subject to the rights granted by a Deed dated 10 January 2008 made between (1) Quorn Marina Properties Limited and (2) James Richard Barratt. NOTE: Copy filed.

  17. Point missed, Art is that which is seen by the eye of the beholder. The important thing is this is funded Art creation, so someone has paid money to have this Art created, and that money has trickled down to C&RT, amongst other. Lots of new people, in designer wellies, turned up and gave their time to haul stuff out of the cut. A film is being made about the event, which may help the cause of the canals. Fishermen were made happy because the fish were captured, and looked after. Locals took a passing interest - a major achievement in Newton Heath! This is a good thing for the canal, whether the finished product will be "Art" remains to be seen. -- Cheers Ian Mac.

  18. The best example of this which has happened to me: Four people; Dave (Me), Kevin, Alys and Bryn. I needed help moving house. Kevin needed a fridge freezer. Bryn needed someone to do the flowers at his wedding. Alys needed someone to construct her a website. The solution: Bryn has a van... I had no space for a fridge freezer in my new house... Alys is a top gardener/florist/horticulturalist... Kevin is a web-designer... We all gave something and we all got something. We just didn't get anything from the person we gave from... if you follow me! Four happy people.

  19. Why does objecting to doing pointless work that subsequently has to be undone by others in 50% of cases make someone an 'idle bastard'? I'd be interested to hear your reasoning but I suspect from the forensic rigour of your first sentence, you don't actually have any. MtB

  20. Then lots of people don't understand reality, mathematically speaking , its easy to claim something is real, but movement of boats along a cut as lots of variables. To be honest them that want to leave gates open are just Idle bastards.

  23. There is room for youngsters if they can afford a boat and learn the rules which are basically 'slow & quiet'. Remember many of the 'old codgers' once upon a time dug out the disused canal so you young 'uns could push them off the water.
