Peculiar mooring restriction claims

I have not been to Berko for some years but remember it as a quite middle-class town. So, as Lidl appeals to people who think that Tesco is too posh, I can well imagine protests, or at least refined snorts of disapproval.

I think you will find that Aldi and Lidli have made a strategic decision to expand into areas that have been traditionally seen as 'middle class' on the basis that it's now seen as 'trendy' to be seen shopping in one of their stores' and 'middle class' shoppers are regularly gravitating to shop there rather than Sainsbury's or Waitrose.

(We are due to get a new Aldi soon but their decision to come to our area is based on their more usual reasons.....)

Slightly ot I was brought up in posh Pinner and for years there were outcrys etc whenever chip shops and takeaways were proposed.

When we cruised through Berko a couple of times staying over I could feel the possible similar culture clash.

Well, they've got a Lidl's now. Don't know about a chippie

Not everyone disapproves.

A few months ago, a local resident was interviewed on the radio and said that Lidl should be allowed to build a store in Berkhamsted, because.... "It would keep the riff-raff out of Waitrose".

As the gentleman concerned is Director/Company Secretary of a company that shows ......

The combined cash at bank value for all businesses where Gordon holds a current appointment equals £5.6k, a combined total current assets value of £5.6k with a total current liabilities of £145.9k and a total current net worth of £3.5k. Roles associated with Mr Gordon Bluck within the recorded businesses include: Company Secretary ............ you'd think his efforts might be best focussed on diminishing his financial liberties.

You are out of date, Athy. Lidl is the new Waitrose. Well, not quite, but allegedly the middle classes are now flocking to it.

ETA: Just seen a thousand people beat me to it.

But let me just observe that CARP is an absolutely splendid acronym.

If anybody is still interested in the original topic, this is the answer that I eventually received from the Town Council about the erection of "No Mooring" signs on the offside at Canal Field, Berkhamsted.

The answer was finally received last April two months after I asked the question, which was not the fault of the particular councillor I initially approached, because he forward the query on immediately. I have removed his name, because it is not relevant, as he is not actually involved in CARP or in these decisions.

Mr Fincher

Councillor xxxxxx forwarded your query to me to respond.

I apologise for the delay in replying.

Mooring issues were considered at the last Canal and Riverside Partnership (CARP) meeting where it was agreed that DBC reinstate the “No Mooring” signs along the length of Canal Fields. The meeting also welcomed the commitment by the Canal and Riverside Trust to install additional mooring rings along the Waitrose side of the canal to increase mooring space for short-term, rather than long-term stays, to avoid environmental problems to the canal brought about by such longer-term mooring without commensurate facilities being available.

Town Clerk

As you will see, I believe this decision related to offside mooring has nothing to do with CRT - it is purely a council decision.

Last time I was in Berko it was still ethnically cleansed, but I heard they're going to put 20,000 Syrian refugees in the town. That would freak the locals out!

Did you hear it from NBW?

Cameron says we are going to accept 20,000 over the next 5 years, and they are going to be spread around.

So I suspect you have been misinformed. However, I won't let the berks know. Why spoil a good story?
