Grace and Favour Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 look, I only put up here what I heard, don't shoot the messenger. If he had any "good" news, it would have been in canalworld by now! Don't worry about dissent in de ranks - - they're just bored because nobody's produced a decent April 1st gag
Ssscrudddy Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 (edited) a comment on several useful posts leading up to it, people hanging around waiting for things to happen. Some fall on stoney ground..... Yay I got a mention. 1 thing I'd like to know, why is Narrowboatworld helping to mislead the moorers at Pillings Lock? Why doesnt Allen Richards say something about this? From what I've read he is against CaRT, & it would seem so is Narrowboatworld. Yet it seems they are happy to spout PLs stuff about a new NAA going to be in place, but apparently dont want to publish CaRT's opposite view about the matter. What have the moorers at Pillings Lock done to upset them to such an extent that they dont want to let the moorers know this? Edited April 1, 2014 by Ssscrudddy

Ssscrudddy Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 A culvert from the marina to the canal? Along with a dirty great pilling across the entrance to Pillings Lock Marina
johnlillie Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 there is a culvert that diverts governor's brook under the canal to the river. Originally it went right round the site and crossed what is now the marina entrance.

Alan de Enfield Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 Just picked up April "TowpathTalk" and there is still (an optimistic) half page ad on the back cover : Free weekend moorings for Trade Exhibitors Boats for sale Holiday Boat Hire Kids activities Hog Roast & Band "On the Water" weekend of 3rd to 5th May @ Pillings Lock marina
chazzy Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 Some time back in this thread, I think it might have been PL put a statement on here that there would be work done on a culvert near the marina and moorers shouldn't be worried if they see work boats near the marina entrance. Having said that, good timing by CRT to have some equipment handy for other work if needed.
Dangerous Dave Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 Yes ..Well done Phil..Bit of a wind up here i reckon
Ally Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 Iirc, the culvert issue was first reported by PL this time last year as a problem requiring immediate attention!
adam1uk Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 Iirc, the culvert issue was first reported by PL this time last year as a problem requiring immediate attention! Maybe they were a bit short of funds to do anything about it sooner... 1
Ally Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 Maybe they were a bit short of funds to do anything about it sooner... Especially for the immediate area
Mike Todd Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 Maybe they were a bit short of funds to do anything about it sooner... about £180K short?
Peter X Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 Where's Stoney ground then, who plays there? Richard <stony silence> No stone left unturned to bring you the answer; it's in Anguilla: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoney_Ground 1
johnlillie Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 should be handy that the boats are in the area for the 14th.

Paul G2 Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 I seem to recall, way back when this thread started, there was something mentioned that CRT had some maintenance work scheduled there at Pillings for early Spring. I don't remember what the work was. It was reported on this thread a couple of weeks ago that some private contractor had been out and did some kind of light work for a couple of days. What exactly they were doing there, whether they performed the entire scope of the planned maintenance, or were just a reconnaissance mission, I don't think was ever mentioned here. If I were in charge of scheduling for CRT, I'd certainly try to have the maintenance work and the closure scheduled for the same time. Moving equipment can be costly. On the other hand, it's interesting that this navigation alert is in effect "until further notice". That sounds rather open-ended, and not at all like a planned bit of maintenance. Perhaps this is CRT's way of saying, "Yoo-hoo. Reality check time!" to not only the obfuscators in charge of PLM but also the moorers there who may have their heads in the sand and/or believe the song and dance coming from PLM management. I would imagine that the outrage is going to reach crescendo levels as soon as the work boats show up.
GoodGurl Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 there is a culvert that diverts governor's brook under the canal to the river. Originally it went right round the site and crossed what is now the marina entrance. maybe they will block off the entrance and empty the marina via the brook.

Lockie Junior Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 (edited) I suppose we shall have to wait and see what C&RT do. I'm rather looking foward to watching what happens.... Edited April 2, 2014 by Lockie Junior

The restriction is open ended, but will not disrupt navigation all the time.

You will have a short delay on your journey (ie until we move the boat out of the way) not - the work will be undertaken for a short period of time.
costalot Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 Digging and pouring the concrete ground anchor points for the planned chain across the marina entrance?
Popular Post Peter X Posted April 2, 2014 Popular Post Report Posted April 2, 2014 Just picked up April "TowpathTalk" and there is still (an optimistic) half page ad on the back cover : Free weekend moorings for Trade Exhibitors Boats for sale Holiday Boat Hire Kids activities Hog Roast & Band "On the Water" weekend of 3rd to 5th May @ Pillings Lock marina Magazine timetables being what they are, the ad was probably placed and paid for (no credit given?) weeks ago, but well after PL knew the CRT's intentions. I wonder whether PL has been repeating his version of past and future events so often that he now believes it? It might be possible if CSH and a few others around him are reluctant to tell him the reality, particularly as is seems that so far only a trickle of boats have left the marina. More might go over the next two weekends, after all if someone pays for a marina mooring it's because they'd rather be there, so they might as well enjoy it while they can. There's no harm in them planning to leave on Sat 12th April just in case some miracle happens to save them the bother. Is he offering to crane in any trading boat? Depending on CRT's timetable for letting boats out, they may need their free mooring for a while until that opportunity arises. Who are the band? I suggest it should feature Greg Lake, Mr Steadman on strings, Roy Rollings blowing his own trumpet, and PL on the fiddle. 8
