In Post, is this really some sort of letterbox

Featured Posts

I am trying to get a parcel sent to me, Amazon won't sent the item to their Counters.

So I thought I'd try Ebay, obvio6sly need a different location, I know EVRI do some sort of service, but ive no idea how to get the stuff sent to me. Im not far from a DHL, i think, , but again I'm not clear how to get items sent.

The Inpost site assumes I know what they do, but I don't. I lost the one and only item I sent there, no refund.

I don't understand this. What's an Amazon Counter?

Will they send to a PO Box perhaps?

Or a Post Restante address?

"In the United Kingdom, mail is addressed to POSTE RESTANTE (or TO BE CALLED FOR), which is written after the full name of the recipient (as appears on the identification to be presented e.g. a passport, if abroad), then the name and full address of the destination post office, thus:

Mr. John Smith

POSTE RESTANTE

Islington Post Office

160-161 Upper Street

London N1 1US

If only addressed to a town name, for example "POSTE RESTANTE, LONDON", mail will go to the closest main post office branch (there being more than a hundred crown offices – directly managed post office branches – in London).[39] Some small branches do not offer the poste restante service.

The sender should also include their return address. In the United Kingdom, the Royal Mail will hold mail posted from within the UK for two weeks,[40] whereas mail posted from abroad is normally held for one month.[40] If the recipient is at sea, however, it will be held for two months.[41] Where mail is not collected within that time, it will be returned to the sender, or if there is no sender indicated, will be treated as undeliverable. If the sender would like uncollected mail returned sooner, they can indicate this on the envelope. Timescales vary from country to country according to local practice."

No, the Amazon Counter and the Amazon Hub get parcels from Amazon., they are small shops and post offices.  I can get most stuff from Amazon, and collect it, but not model ships in a a box it seems.

Local PO is not PostRestante

I've abandoned Amazon and gone to Ebay for my ship model kit,  problem is that the sellers only sell the kit but not the glues etc, even though they ey call themselves model sites.

I can understand not posting knives, or even saws, but not glues.

The item is from Amazon? I thought they should send it wherever you want it sent? I must be missing something? When I order from Amazon they ask me if I want the parcel sent to my usual address and they also suggest some local pick up points, shops, lockers, etc. Clearly I don't understand what your issue is exactly.

The issue is the item. They won't send this model boat kit to an amazon locker.

An amazon locker has a defined dimensin  but the Counter just collect parcels in a corner till someone  picks them up. As far as I can see.

This is a fairly recent change owing to Royal Mail's policy of not allowing anything that contain solvents etc. to be sent through the post.

Glue manufacturers rarely itemise the constituents on the tube/bottle etc. so many retailers have taken the chance to not send any glues through the post. I have been building models for my model railway layout for years, and have accumulated a good variety of glues, I usually buy them directly from model shops or dealers at shows.  If your kit is made from styrene, the glue will be solvent based and will need to be bought from a model or craft shop, or a wargaming model shop.

I removed any hazardous things from my Amazon cart, leaving only a wooden boat model in a box, no knives or glues, but Amazon refused to send it other than to a house as far as i can see.

I went to a different seller, Ebay, maybe he does not send glues due to H&S, that would explain why they are not on his website.

I can buy some glues from local shops, but not the specialist glues.

Ill end up going to Leeds or Halifax if i can identify an old fashioned model shop. Its a real pain to waste a day just to get a few tubes of glue and some tools.

Amazon ... not every seller uses the drop box facility - I have not checked but possibly they have to pay extra for this service or don't want the hassle.

I am a continuous cruises so get my post sent to my son who every now and then uses DPD to send it to me. I am very impressed with DPD - it is normally ready for my collection the day after it is picked up from the place it was dropped off at, which in most cases has been the day before. We use the Monday to Friday service so no deliveries or pickup at the weekend / bank holidays.

I am interested to know what you mean by "specialist glues" I have been restoring and repairing old wooden furniture for most of my life, and am aware of only three types of wood glue, all of which are easily available without needing to travel to Leeds or Halifax.

If you need to find a model shop, here are some in Halifax / Leeds:- https://www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/county/westyorkshire

Hi, yes I pretty much know which model I want, its in the model shop in Leeds, which should have other goodies I might need advice on. I see a local model place seems to show  dozens of boats online, just not what i want. I need to phone to make sure they are in stock, it would be easier if they could InPost to me, but thats a bit of a faff to be if they've never used it before.

Its a whole new minefield to cross.

The model boat business has standard or fast acting PVA, and also the ca glues come in fast, slow, sandable, hi viscocity, low viscosity.

Ebay do sonething called Click snd Collect but not all vendors participate, and you dont find out until you are at Payment.

Ive trawled pretty much all the local shops, most are closed today of course, but a lot of them now specialise with plastic stuff, Radio Control,  and war games etc.

I assume you are referring to Deluxe Materials glues, and you can choose to pay through the nose for a tiny bottle of those glues from a hobbies shop if you wish. I use Titebond which is a professional pva glue, which comes in standard, fast acting, waterproof etc. CA is just another name for cyanocrylate glue ie: Superglue, available in a range of viscosities and speeds, both are readily available from good DIY and Timber Merchants.

For polystyrene plastic I use a liquid solvent, Plasweld, which consists of dichloromethane (methylene chloride).  It is best applied using an artists paintbrush and wicks into the space between two pieces of plastic by capillary action where it dissolves the two adjacent surfaces so they become firmly and permanently welded together. The advantage for plastic kit construction is that it evaporates rapidly from exposed surfaces so you don't have a problem with glue oozing out at joints.  I get mine from a local shop that sells model railway stuff.

Yes I also use EMA Plasweld, it works in exactly the way as described above. The only problem is that it does not like joining pre-painted comonents as it can dissolve the paint at the joining edges. I am currently constructing a complicated building which requires some components to be pre-painted and have just purchased some Revel Contacta glue which, apparently, has a slower drying time and can be applied through a fine nozzle, to the surfaces to be joined, avoiding capillary seepage damaging the paint, I hope!

I have come across what seems like an altered behaviour pattern. Seemingly odd, as previously, deliveries were being offered at several locations. Not sure if this is what happens if you complain about something to Amazon, which I have had cause to do.

I rarely use Amazon, no complaints.

.Anyways, Ebay has a part completed kit Bluenose 2 kit at heavy discount which I thought I had bought today, but its no longer available,  annoying cos if I  messed up, I'd still have the materials and could start afresh to make a  better job.

This model making is quite intense,  the more I watch Tom Lauria ( who builds museum quality), the more I realise this is not for the fainthearted,  Tom is the Christian Willliams  of model boat building.

Have you checked that the model is no longer available because you have bought it. click on "purchase history" in "my ebay" it can sometimes take a while to update, but you should have received confirmation email

The Listings show Click and Collect on them -at least they do if you use the app.Double check on the Postage details to double check.

You can also filter the results to.show only Click.and Collect- the downside is it is often from a bit to ALOT more expensive to buy.

As a rule only items dispatched from a Amazon Warehouse can be sent to a locker or counter. If a seller sends direct to the buyer the option for locker or counter pickup is removed.  Only Amazon drivers have access to lockers

I'm not near any shops that sell that stuff, the local shop has sold out of ca glue and has no other. I've pretty much run out of time on my 48hour mooring,  the 48 hour delivery of the model boat only starts when they actually post it!

I'm happy enough to use Gorilla glue which is probably the same recipe as Titebond, but if I have to order online I can get fast acting wood glue and slow acting ca as an offer, it's under a tenner for both, I only need small bottles, it's a fairly small model, and wood glue does not keep for ten years DAMHIK.

Some of the glue claims to be sandable, this would save on buying filler, for the intricate work I need the precision ca nozzle dispenser, its 50p more than the standard cap type. You have no idea how far these modellers go to get results. ;)

As per my track record of finding a new hobby, I'm keen to get a good start, I've even found a vintage model kit of Shamrock, which I could tackle if all goes well with the first one. They can be sold on Etsy to recoup the capital cost. :)

Free collection in person from Ayr hospital, that's why there are no takers, the hospital is out in the sticks.

Also it's the original kit from the1950's, the updated release will be much better quality

The standard Gorilla glue athough powerful expands as it cures, not suitable for models I think. They do do one more like Superglue though.

I think they do a PVA glue as well, they seem to do a range of glues.

There are a number of on line model dealers who send accessories by mail/courier. Two that spring to mind are Howes and Leeds Models. fail to understand your problems. A quick Google will provide details. Oh, by the way, I've had both modelling knives and saws delivered without question.

It's on an auction site with 3 days to go. The picture with 30 minutes to go may well be somewhat different.
