depends,

has the Shepherds Rest closed?

I heard a rumour it had.

Todmorden or Sowerby Bridge?

Ossett Brewery sold the Shep at Sowerby Bridge earlier this year. I haven't been in since, but the Trip Advisor reviews over the last few months are mixed.

We'll be coming the other way about a week later, hopefully Wigan will be open by then -- if not, the Rochdale beckons...

If you/me do we can cry into a couple of beers and swap commiserations around Summit. Of course I will have done the swamp and you will have it to do. You will be a lot happier cos you will have done Yorkshire. I, on the other hand, I will be depressed having suffered the dark side. We can have a sweep over number of visits down the weed hatch over fifty in Rochdale and Manchester. How about a prize for the most disgusting item removed from the propeller? I'm well experienced on that score. Can you beat razor wire?

Depends on your definition of disgusting -- hard to get off or just plain horrible?

A fisherman's keep net is pretty hard to get off, all those fiberglass (or were they carbon fibre?) rings get wrapped round in the netting and are bloody difficult to untangle/cut, nothing like as nasty as razor wire though. We nearly picked up a Ford Escort once but I just avoided it...

The Rochdale must be a lot worse than last time I went through, IIRC we got from Manchester all the way to the summit without a single dive down the hatch. But hopefully this won't be an issue, I can get tangled up in weed on the L&L instead if they haven't cleared it... 😞

There's been a contractor on a weed boat for the last couple of days above Johnson's Hillock, clearing a lot of the stringy stuff out.

Presumably they'll be doing or have done more areas too.

Let's hope both of us avoid the mattress. (there's always a mattress  - so far round someone else's prop)
Last time we came that way I was down the weedhatch 3 times in 500 yards approaching lock 50. two saris and a donkey jacket plus the usual orange string and plastic. Not in the keepnet league I admit.

that’s one of my dreads,

can I ask how you dealt with it?

(I collect myself a new sari everytime I do Titford pools.
But they’re never my colour.)

Wish my hair was long enough for dreads. No problems with my sari had it years. I’m colour blind so it doesn’t matter. Beer good in the White star.🍺🌟🤪

It wasn't good as it happened in the filthy water at failsworth on the Rochdale. The water was mucky so I didn't see it until I pulled it and cut my finger. Added to the concerns regarding weils disease were the seven stitches in my other hand from an accident the previous week. However, I managed to cut it off with wire cutters and a screwdriver. Following that I spent some time scrubbing my hands with neat dettol and hot water.

Lost a bit of time but didn't get overtaken by the boat behind as the steerer was grappling with a mattress round his prop.

Just come through Wigan and now moored on the Leigh branch at Scotsmans Flash. Spoken with a couple of CaRT guys and it is looking grim for lock 69. They have removed 10's of tons of silt and still have approx 60 tons to remove before they can start the rebuild. It seems that water has got under the cill and eroded the subsurface. The date that was being suggested was 6th November for completion which is also the start of the winter works on that flight.

I asked if they were likely to have a couple of days between starting winter works and finishing the repairs to get waiting boats through, they couldn't say sadly.

@IanD it looks like you may have to via the Rochdale.

Buggered our plans too. We were looking forward to going further on the L&L and maybe even wintering around Skipton. :(

ETA: Maybe wait for the official announcemnt, believe it will be Friday.

Buggers up our plans too -- not the boating itself, sons GF was coming up by train to meet us in Leeds... 😞

We will still cruise, so that's the good news. Possibly the Macc and Peak forrest (towards Bugsworth basin way, Marple is closed). Want to get somewhere where there is good winter scenery for photography.

Hmmmm not good. It looks like we will be running the gauntlet through the swamp again. This is three years running we haven't been able to use the L&L for the homeward leg. I don't have much confidence in C&RT North West, especially after the not sunken boat incident. Should be ashamed! The number of days the Rochdale has been open this year isn't great. A boat left a temporary mooring at our club at Battyeford on 28th May to go over. We met at Rode Heath last week.

they do usually recognise this sort of situation and normally make some provision for waiting boats, at least thats what I've seen in the past. I can't imagine it would be a big deal to delay the 6th november works by a few days - they could still start site mobilisation works for instance.

Met them in Lymm. All the best. Plans gone txts up. They missed a lot of boating up north. The Lancaster and the Liverpool. Sadly they were saying it may their last trip up north. 😢

Does anyone know actual dimensions required for a C&H handspike? I can knock one up at home, but don't have a workshop on the boat if it doesn't fit...

Rochdale it is then, lets hope for not too many razor-wire/mattress-type incidents... 😉

Oh look, CWDF search is your friend... 🙂

If, for any reason, you need a handspike a bit quick, I can confirm that a pickaxe handle from Screwfix fits a treat with minimal fettling to just flatten the curves a bit at the end.

The sockets do vary a bit so a bit of slack is good.  The handspike will pass through holes on both sides of the drum, so slack is not a big problem.

Great idea, I've got to go to Screwfix anyway -- and a pickaxe handle is a lot stronger than a bit of softwood... 🙂

-- except Screwfix don't seem to sell axe/pickaxe handles any more... 😞

-- but plenty of other places do... 🙂

Those "razor-wire/mattress-type incidents" are a doddle, it's C&RT's track record at keeping it open you need to worry about.
Just so you can prove me wrong I say "we won't get over cos C&RT are hopeless and waste money on blue signs 😆".

Here's a thought if it does go tits-up you can have my mooring and I'll have yours over the winter.
