Blown gasket and 1 mile and a flight from a marina

As he isn't on board, I doubt that.

The concept that anyone holds Alan (the subject of the above post) in any form of regard or reverence does,  admittedly, show a certain lack of judgement. Good at cutting and pasting, yes. Much else, well...

Seconds out, round 2!

Pass the popcorn please.

I hope that a passing boater gets the name of his boat and publishes it on here.  Martyn Lucas, this is your life.

I do look forward to meeting him when he is next broken down.  We could compare notes on the BMC 1.8D engine!

“Him” looks more like it’s going to be a “Her” as they are referred to as “She” on their Facebook.
No mater what she has said, I think most on here would give her a tow,  as we know it’s only a forum and not the real world and she hasn’t really been threatening or aggressive like some.  She’s probably frustrated with the boats situation and just worried about it, understandable really, but most would help if they could with a tow, in the real world.

Really? It seems that the person's nme is Martyn Lucas, which looks male. Out of interest I looked on Face Book and found five people of that name. Four were male and the oyjer one appeared to be an M.G. sports car.

I suppose that, just as Robyn can be a girl's name, Martyn could too. How about Merlyn? Puffyn? The Blackbyrds wereamale, though.

Yes, here’s a snippet from the Martyn Lucas Facebook page that was mentioned and shown on the post earlier. It clearly says “She’s” updated her photo. Not that it really matters.

This is the posting I saw

Heys guys - I was hoping incould ask for some advice or perhaps somebody might be in a position to help us if you’re in the area. We have a 70ft narrow boat with a blown head gasket about 1m from the Stratford-upon-Avon canal kings wood junction.
We need to get to dry dock, which is about half hour tow (no locks) before an 18-lock flight which I’ve been told are pretty close so I could pull it through with some effort!
I‘m more than happy to pay what it takes for either a tow to the bottom of the flight, support in getting it all the way or finding a professional boat-moving service of sorts. The tow would maybe an hour, or im guessing a full day for the full move.
Im quite desperate to do this asap..any support or advice youncould offer would be massively appreciated.

My question as well. I am not sure the hits I fund are for this person at all.

A Martyn Lucas and a Ms. Sheldrake (the names of posters referenced on Facebook above) are listed by Companies House as directors of a Cardiff based company called Carapace Slate (Sunscape Systems).

Thanks, another member PMd me with that info. I wish it could be remembered that not all members use the likes of Facebook, so the names were not available to them.

I am a chartered engineer with 50 years experience in mines, oil refineries and power stations. All I know about boat engines and 12v electrics is down to Tony Brooks and his excellent course that I attended when I started boating. Please keep posting Tony - we need you.

I was a Chartered Engineer before I retired and let my registration lapse, but in common with all EC registrants mine was a specialised area of knowledge which emphatically did not include BMC diesels.

There are tens of thousands of people out there who think they know everything there is to know about acoustics, by virtue of their ownership of a pair of ears.

Perhaps we should all be a little more respectful of the specialist knowledge of other professionals?

Totally agree. Having worked briefly in the industry myself and picked up a smattering of knowledge, I too notice how everyone else in the pub always still knows far more about the subject of sound deadening than I do! And you too, probably, lol!

P.S. the subject crops up regularly in the bell-ringing chambers in church towers, and I've learned to just keep my trap shut as every male bell ringer (and some female ones) is an acoustics-insulation EXPERT! Not just me :)

Putting aside who said what to who, there’s an element here of established members stalking a new poster, after they’ve already been seen off.

That’s not a good advert for this forum, unless of course you’re happy to continue as an ever diminishing clique.

Well said that man and put far more eloquently than I ever could (had to look that word up 😀)

I think you might have been a little more understanding had you read some of the truly nasty stuff posted by the OP and deleted by Team Mod.

Hateful stuff, in fact. What's left is tame.

The newbie thread that spirals downhill to grotesque insults is a near weekly occurrence.

I sometimes consider that such posts are deliberate trolling, although this one didn't strike me as such.

Is there really an individual sad enough to troll a canal boating forum?

If not then the common denominator in these spats are the regular posters on this forum. It takes two parties to have a falling out.

If there is a troll then there is only one thing sadder than someone who trolls a canal boat forum.

Just walk away.

What might that be? All of us who read the topic?

New members are always welcomed. Some fit in well and become long-term contributors, others fall by the wayside for a variety of reasons.

Remember, we were all new members once.

I think you're wearing rose-tinted spectacles -- responses to newbies (not from you!) are quite often aggressive and sometimes demeaning, and often from the same few posters... 😉

Newbies are often somewhat naive and don't have years of knowledge about boats and boating, and it would be better to make allowances for this than use it to disparage them. However some posters seem to enjoy flaunting their superior knowledge rather than being helpful... 😞

I find this frequent mentioning of Chartered Engineer status as something that is to be respected  when boats and boating are under discussion as slightly odd and not necessarily helpful. I know a few charted engineers but I don't think that one of them has ever been involved in canal and river boating and would be the first people to admit ignorance of the subject. I also have worked with many marine engineers over many years,  and I have to say that most of them have a far better knowledge of most aspects of marine engines both large and small not to mention electrical and auxiliaries of all types. The vast majority as part of their training  have been  certificated up to and including degree level. That is one of the reasons why I am always wary of so called marine engineers on the waterways who sometimes can talk a good talk but seldom are able to walk the walk. There are exceptions of course but you have to seek them out.
