Up to a certain value. Mine cost £1600 and they contributed £1000 towards it.

That’s not bad I suppose. Didn’t realise there’s a cap on value covered. But you have a new gearbox.

If it's any consolation mine gave up today too. Not great when you stop to clear a lot of weed off the prop and it rotates... less .

Unlike other issues I've had with losing drive this one isn't remedied (temporarily) by topping up the oil

RCR will get called tomorrow after a chat with the bloke who originally rebuilt it...

A repaired one, twice. Each time they chucked me a grand, so I'm not complaining. It would take over thirty years of subs to cover that. They've also replaced the starter, and done a couple of repairs. They have also left me in the lurch twice because they sent incompetent engineers who knew nothing about Listers  and I had to pay for my own. Usually, now, they listen when I insist on a Lister specialist.

I treat them as an insurance policy and a last resort. It means I know I can get someone more competent than me to help when I break down, and in the worst case get a tow to a yard.

Most of their employees, in my experience, only know modern engines, they use contractors for the old ones.

We have considered and dismissed the idea of RCR over and over again. For me, as I see it, there’s many get out clauses, like any other insurance company I suppose.

Not really. What's covered is pretty specific, and they don't quibble about it.  If you are reasonably competent with engines yourself, you don't need them. For those of us who aint, they have their place.

This ^^^^ is why I don't join! A. I'm relatively competent and carry tools and spares, but, and more pertinent, B. I can't afford to subsidise Arthur! :D

Are you sure it needs a new gearbox?  New or RCR/Key  repainted?

I think it is the drive plate but RCR says it is the gearbox.

We shall see who is right.

We were on the Cov yesterday so just missed you.

Last but one time we met you had a broken gearbox, do you break one every year? 😀

............Dave

Hi Dave, it was the drive plate that was broken when we last met, not the gearbox.

:)

RCR love saying it’s a major component…one boat I helped said they needed a new gearbox/engine…turned out to be a jammed inlet valve that was sorted by taking the head off!

Wouldn’t let RCR within a mile of my boat. The incompetence is astounding. I trust you expect to buy a complete new engine/transmission/boat If you listen to their advice when you probably need an o ring…..

Who would you suggest to repair my boat?

I’d phone James Packer of jimms where you are at the moment. 07845 277058 I think is his current number. Failing that one of the local hire bases.

Edited to add

or @RLWP of this parish….trading as marine engine services Midlands.

My views on RCR and Key are well known on here so I will not repeat the horror stories that I have witnessed.

Hurth mechanical gearbox? if so and it is genuinely shot, I would suggest a new PRM.   https://www.prm-newage.com/c12-mechanicalR&D

PRM 60, 90 or 125 depending on your set up, more reliable and almost the same cost as a full repair on a Hurst.

If its a drive plate again, have a chat with R&D for a better than standard plate, they can send to you very fast.  http://www.randdmarine.com/
