I think there are other makes on the market but having seen one of these in action and having read what folk on here said, Santa brought me the Go Windlass one.

With me is was almost a necessity! For years my windlass of choice had been a long throw aluminium one but I found that the big circles my arm had to make when using it was causing painful shoulders , especially after doing long flights. With the Go Windlass, I often find it is enough to use the very short non ratchet hole  and locking shoulder pain is a thing of the past.

One problem I see is that they stated somewhere that they are not compatiable with the modern tappered spindle-have they now changed the design and is that nolonger the case?

They say: "The GO Windlass will not fit non standard sized tapered spindles found in some areas particularly on the Grand Union canal between Napton junction and Kingswood junction (which include Hatton and Stockton locks) and those around Calcutt. These tend to be the more modern ”kettle” hydraulic gates which have larger taper."

Fitted everything on the T&M, Shroppie and Llangollen. It's a bit loose though, so can slip off.

Interesting as we are looking at these but came across a user who said its pretty useless on the spindles found on GU Calcutt locks/Hatton flight etc - they are too large and its pretty dangerous as it slips off very easily?  Can anyone confirm if newly purchased ones are better than older ones??

Correct. We found it doesn’t fit those lock bits.

Point of order m'Lud, those spindles are not tapered.

Indeed, and neither is the paddle mechanism hydraulic on those locks, let alone the gates.

While checking an obscure grammatical point recently I came across a blog witten to promote a proof reading service. It had the answer I sought, but to see it I had to click on a pop up window asking whether the reader was interested in their services.  When I clicked "No thanks" it acknowledged my reply with the message "Good luck, genius!"
