there’s parts of the North I’ve still to visit.
My aim was to get to York this year and on to Ripon.
But it’s becoming very tricky to get anywhere owing to water issues

And the Figure of 3 locks are out too.

but the beers cheaper up north

and the scenery is stunning

and people are very friendly
and it’s very North of the South

and .... I might stay ?

I always promote the BCN whenever opportunity arises. I meet too many people who’d rather skirt around the BCN
If anyone has any interest in canals and the history of canals then the BCN is the  starting point.
And it’s got plenty of pretty scenery.

And the BCN is a hundred miles worth of canals

It is also only in the north that it is possible to buy decent Fish and chips. The muck they chuck out in places like Braunston and the rest of the deep south should be illegal.

As you know, we share your fondness for the BCN even though its a bit grotty at times, and I am from Brum. We like a drink in an interesting pub and the wonderful Flapper has now gone, and the Prince of Wales was not so good on our last visit (two years ago), modern "Beverage Destinations" like the Canal House are ok but are just not the same. And now the Ickneild port loop is a modern housing estate rather than a bit of canal magic. We used to visit Brum twice every year but last year had another look at the Coventry and did enjoy a good night at the Greyhound.  Its a Lot of locks to go into central Brum and I don't think Brum is worth it anymore which is really sad because the BCN needs more boats.

I know.
Things are changing

But hopefully the canals will stay and remain a constant.

they’re piss easy locks anyway and there’s always water.

The Cov Canal is good too.

I like the Greyhound

Does a decent pint of Bass. ?

We could have a good piss up doing a stretch of the Cov around Tamworth and a nip into Atherstone.

I reckon next year could be another trip down to Bristol with a detour into Liverpool, do you fancy another visit to the K&A? The Barge at Honeystreet is up and running again.

I do fancy another triP to the K&A.

I’d like to move according to local rules though.

I’ll come if we can drink at every pub on the way.

You mean spend ten years in Bradford on Avon?  The 'Shoes is a good pub but I reckon every night for 14 days should be enough. (and another 14 on the way back)

Yep 10 yrs on a VM mooring.

Which would be the most annoying ?

My favourite pub was in Devises but I can’t remember the name. Could be British Lion ? It was freehold and not a Wadsworth.

I do remember the Shoes in Bradford on Avon and liked it.
It’s also a town with more barbers than pubs.
Which says odd things.

British Lion, would be your sort of pub, sadly he won't let me in with the dog. I even offered to go in for an afternoon session and drink as much beer as I could and he still wouldn't let me in. Nice big garden out the back and thats ok for dogs but inside is better, its a proper public bar. Four ever changing beers labelled 1 to 4 so you don't even need to pronounce complicated beer names.

There are lots of Barbers everywhere now, most odd, grow it long when your young and let it fall out when your old. ?

I reckon next year will be a hard one for lots of businesses so lots of boating and pubbing is a civic duty, keep the canals and pubs busy.

Absolutely.

Most folk in the real South would consider Stoke and Hull as close neighbours . . .

We have some of the very best down here in the ultimate South West (not your Bristol, mind)

Got the enthusiasm but 45 minutes to the nearest winding hole and back gets a little monotonous after 3 times.

I am really lucky, a winding hole 10 minutes away in one direction and 20 minutes away in the other direction.

Looked at a canalside house near Worcester on the Staffs and Worcester, but the nearest winding holes were several locks away in each direction.

For me it's the Caldon canal I don't like.

Must have taken you ages to get there too, what with Stoke being at the top of a lot of locks whichever way you approach it! ??

In Stroud, not allowed on my boat

:(

It dawned on me today: Isn’t your boat your primary residence when summer starts?

Get on it and get going.
Enjoy.

There are lots of take aways and offys missing your custom.

Take care, after 6 months lockdown its easy to loose the boating fitness, maybe start with some small trips first. Yesterday we did a full days boating on the Rochdale and I hurt all over, and after just two small cans of Vocation Life and Death I sat on the sofa and went straight to sleep.

It’s all the beer that does it

I’ve been sitting for months pouring beer brown me neck like there’s no tomorrow.

And no exercise.

Mind you it don’t take long to get back in to the locking.

It's not the locking, it's the 6.5% that does it ...

But I did have a few aches last weekend with 36 L&L locks.

These modern strong IPAs in cans are strange and dangerous things. I can just about put away three bottles of Henry Westons 8.2% vintage cider (not every night and I hope the doctor or government are not reading this) but a couple of cans of Vocation and I need to lie on the sofa.  The Hop Skip and Juice is even more lethal than the Life and Death but maybe that's because it comes in bigger cans.

Luckily we have now escaped from Hebden so I won't have to go into Vocation every Saturday for a box of cans. I think the real problem was the 15% discount if you buy two boxes.

The current problem is that the dog is seriously injured and will have hospital appointments for the next few months so I CRT let us we really need to spend the rest of this year in the Calder Valley.

Yes, a nice warm up for me. Wigan flight is a good start after a long winter of not moving.

Hope the dog gets better soon. They are such a worry when they are not well or getting or or both,

Shes not popular, she has really messed things up this time. Shes an old girl but despite us keeping a look out she found a hare to chase and went off like a teenager, ruptured and substantially detached her Achilles tendon. Luckily there is a specialist hospital in Manchester than mends lurcher legs. She is now held together with screws. If we can keep her pretty much still for 12 weeks she has a chance of complete recovery, but one bad move and those skinny lurcher bones can shatter at the screw. This has pretty much wrecked our boating AND hill walking for the rest of this year

Oh poor dog, and poor you! It will be difficult keeping her still but fortunately lurchers are  renowned for liking a laid back life. Will she settle on her own on the boat while you go hill walking or is she used to going everywhere with you? Not much space on a boat but a crate might be useful if you can fit one in.
