Crane with two legs on each bank. One might ask how it got there.

Its a dark photo but the examples of this type of crane I have seen are usually have a tracked chassis.  I guess they tracked it onto a pontoon flat, floated it into the lock and stuck the legs out.  Raise crane on legs, remove pontoon, remove water, jobs a goodun.  The incentive being if you don't get the new gates on properly you can't put the water back.😄

That’s how I’ve watched it done on a narrow lock with a smaller crane.

They bought the crane by boat, the crane spread it legs on to the lock sides, then the boat lowered and left through the bottom gates and an empty chamber.

Simple.

They call them Spider Cranes.
Was lock 26E, I think, on the HNC.

Ah, I shall have to let Duncan (Edwards) know about this, it went off to the Wey when he sold it.

Yes, but powered boats only around 150 yards beyond the rail bridge. You can travel a fair bit further by canoe or paddle board, to Pike lock. There’s a good amount of dredging still to do get to the lift bridge at Beards Mill but it’s progressing.

This dredging is up by the Downton road bridge.
