If you to get somewhere fast there are  much  better and usually much cheaper options compared to travelling by boat .

Who mentioned getting anywhere fast? 🤔

If we were in a hurry we certainly wouldn't choose the van as our transport method of choice 🤣🤣🤣

It definitely isn't the quickest thing on four wheels!

Whittington Brook Compare 22Sep2017

I've often thought when passing this landmark, that whoever carved the inscription did it the wrong way round, if you did it on a road sign everybody would end up going the wrong way.

Could this have been an early case of stonemasons dyslexia?

Tees Barrage - River Tees. Apparently they were lifting stop planks out of the White Water canoe course to drain it for repairs/maintenance. Couldn't get any closer due to it being cordoned off in the name of Elf and Safety.

before bridge 28 was built ?

Ah, good point: I'm sure br28 has been there for ever ... more detective work needed, then. Hmmmm The next pictures on the film here are  Bascote, but sadly I didn't make a note in my diary at the time, and I couldn't persuade myself it was at any of the other locks between here and Napton Junction ...

spacer.pngMy first reaction had been that it was obviously

Stockton Top  ...

but I was put off that theory by the large (once-)lock house by the lock. ...

Further investigation found this snowy pic by © StephenMcKay (7Feb2009) showing the building with the same sloping roof and blue door in the gable-end. So Stockton Top  it is.

My pic has foreshortening with a telephoto lens so the building looks closer to the top gate than in the snowy photo ...

The NiceMrGoogle from 2022 shows the big house and the brick building in the distance ...
