It depends where it's mounted in the tunnel. It doesn't have to be in the centre. Mine is on one side and very easy to access from the tunnel opening and take the retaining screws out with a screwdriver. Having the BT offset in the tunnel doesn't affect its performance. Neither does mine, but mine's a 95kgf The two semicircular plastic clips are held in with screws and then the prop comes straight off. There's a recess on the back of the prop that fits over the shear pin.

BT used to run their standby generators monthly to test them. Always to the building load and always until oil and water temperatures had stabilised, typically 10-15 minutes. I was told on my basic generator maintenance course over 50 years ago now that 90% of the wear takes place during start up and the warming up phase, partly because the oil is cold and thick and hasn't circulated properly. To minimise the wear and to allow the generator to start at full design loaf BT used electric crankcase heaters to maintain the engine water jacket at normal operating temperature.

Nice looking system, means I would have to learn R-Pi having failed once 😟 I spent ages with mine trying to find a BT to WiFi converter before I had the TeamViewer moment then it all became so obvious.

Hi All, Now I've done the engine compartment I'm looking to paint the other ones, mainly the two lockers under the Semi-trad seats (where i store chains/pins etc), the Bow Thruster tube area and the Bow Gas Locker. None are too bad but need a bit of rust treatment (lots of 'ok' existing paint). I just used plain bilge paint in the engine bay but thinking i maybe need something a bit robust on these or it'll get very easily chipped especially in my chains locker? I've read about Jotamastic 87 but this seems quite expensive..... any other suggestions? not fussed about colour etc thanks!!! rob -
Firstly,is a new pump needed...or simply a bearing and seal costing maybe 20 quid?......the only pump Ive seen thats not rebuildable was the BT Cummins that had a 'permanently fixed sheet stainless impeller ,and Im sure these pumps are rebuilt in Pakistan and India.

You could say the same for an awful lot of businesses... 😉 Insurance is only really needed to cover the risk of occasional catastrophically expensive incidents which would bankrupt the customer/company, for smaller sums it's not worth it. I know some big companies like BT self-insured cars/vans rather than paying out premiums, on the principle it was cheaper for them to pay directly than allow insurers to cream off a profit. I seem to remember the most expensive car insurance claim ever was many years ago in France, a car came off the road and landed on a railway track, which derailed and destroyed a train, which broke through a canal/river embankment and flooded a large area of the countryside including many houses and factories. I'm not sure even BT would have wanted to pick up the tab for that one... 😉

Yes when I did my initial HV course at a BT training college the instructor wasted no time in saying not to worry, the switches were actually switching 50volts DC not 11,000 volts AC. I told him he had ruined it for me as I wouldn't concentrate as hard on what I was doing.

The common Daly, JK, JBD/Overkill/xiaoxiang BMS units all expose the state of the charge FETs over their coms units- UART, RS485, BT and App, CANBUS are all available, albeit not fitted to or exposed on all batteries. I haven't run across SPI or I2C, yet. All these BMS' will accept an incoming command to open and close the charge FET. There are others ( e.g. ANT-BMS ) I have not investigated The hardest part seem to be in parsing the control messages from the BMS to extract the necessary decision data (pack voltage, cell voltages, balance delta , charge current from the serial string of hex bytes that the BMS transmits in reply to an incoming hex byte string. Hard wired connections seem easier to manage than BT ones. A look round the home automation and diy solar sites will produce a bewildering quantity of information and there is plenty of C, C++ and Python code lurking. N -
Yes, bt it will take two months to heat up those three foot thick stone walls and corrugated iron roof. Boat is toasty now, and will be for next six months!

Sorry BT used the Yuasa EN100-6 which is a lead tin calcium product they don't have a thin plate pure lead product, only Gates (then called Hawker, now called Enersys) Northstar (again now part of Enersys) and Leoch had or have TPPL.

On the rare occasions that a BT standby generator racked up high hours, it would be overhauled at 18,000 hours Two many naughts caused by phat phingers. It should of course have been 1,100 hours per annum. Now corrected.

CRT should do what BT used to do when a land owners trees threatened to.damage the overhead the telephone lines. They sent them a letter giving them 30 days to cut the trees back, and if they failed, BT then employed a contractor to prune them, sending the bill plus a hefty markup to the landowner.

It will but you fish it out via the hatch. Why not just not use the BT and enjoy cruising without one like most boaters? Will save you lots of money.

Yes BT initially took VRSLA's from Chloride, Tungstone and Gates (Hawker Energy). All had a predicted 10 year life. Only the Gates batteries achieved this, the others failing after as little as two years. It turned out that only Gates used pure lead plates and group bars and the other manufacturers used alloyed group bars and plates. The alloyed batteries were failing because group bar corrosion was causing the plates to fall off in extreme cases. This was exacerbated by the average temperature of the batteries being above 25 degrees C, which reduced battery life. The only problem with the Gates batteries was the cost being twice that of their competitors. Eventually Tungstone went bust and Chloride guaranteed their batteries for seven years, and gave BT a rebate when they failed before that. -
Yes I don't know where people get this idea that BTs are useful in high wind or current? They're not and also won't help if the boat is moving at any speed. They're only useful for slow, close quarters handling and reversing over distance.

Not necessarily, a maintenance regime could be instituted, which BT /Openreach does with its existing poles. Blimey Ray you were indoctrinated. I forgot my EIN (Employee Identification Number) within weeks of leaving BT. You couldnt forget it when working for them as it was used to access just about everything.

No, my colleague in headquarters liaised with Yuasa from 2000 to get their pure lead thin plate VRLSA's specifically to reduce the number of early life VRSLA failures. I left BT at the end of 2007, so they may have changed the specification since then. The Gates pure lead acid VRSLSA's used in the 80's certainly had much thicker plates than their competitors.
