  19. Well as the instigator of that thread, which was genuine unlike your self important but completely drivel posts .. most of which like this utterly ludicrous 25 yo single mum comment... (WTF !!!!), Simply confirm what most people already think. There is an old saying better to say silent and be thought stupid , than open your mouth and remove all doubt.... Still it's only fair that I gave you a laugh after all the entertainment your I know best because I've seen a you tube video threads have given us. Have you been on a canal boat yet ?

  20. I am.just wondering why you would want to release a CO2 extinguisher in a confined space where the atmosphere is already becoming unbreathable because of the fire. On a narrowboat the extinguisher is to beat a path to the outdoors if the fire is between you and the only escape route. Swap the fire for a non breathable atmosphere in your escape route. The recommendation is not to use in small rooms. https://www.safelincs.co.uk/how-to-use-co2-fire-extinguishers-section/

  24. And a video showing a large number of great still photos of these engines being made at Doxford & Sons, Sunderland. Yoi might wish to FF through the turgid introduction to about 1.05 mins where the photos start, then slow the video down to get a proper look at the astonishing photos!

  26. Get over yourself. Soon. Ian isn't "taking over every electric boat thread", he's contributing to them from a position of recent first hand experience. Having spent a great deal of time and money to get what he wanted from his boat he is obviously best qualified to comment on his decisions. I'm fairly sure he's also getting sick and tired of having to keep typing disclaimers like "... which suits me so I did it this way, it wouldn't suit everyone ..." He's also commented that some of his ideas were deemed either foolish or impractical by the boatbuilder, so didn't make the finished boat. That tends to suggest that the ones that did make the cut were not deemed foolish or impractical by one of the best regarded boatbuilders still in business.

  28. Sent last week on the Caldon. Met some egregious people. The people who helped my wife (and me!) with a stiff paddle on the staircase. Horrible. The people who found us a table in their pub despite it being clearly rammed to the gills with prebooked tables. Awful. The people who warned us of a hidden underwater obstacle at Cheddleton Flint mill. Vile. The dozen or so CRT volunteers doing a fabulous job clearing the towpath. Terrible people. Dreadful canal as well. All the locks working (bar the one stiff paddle), everything well maintained. I trust that fits in with the style of posting people like to read on here. I'd hate anyone to imagine we had a good time on a nice canal with some lovely people.

  29. Must confess I found the L&L pretty tough when I was on my own at the helm. Some of the bridges were so heavy and I found it tricky getting back on my boat when the pivot was on the opposite side. Was glad to get to the end in Leeds.

  34. There are a large number of boats that do not have an external mains plugs and have an internal 16amp plug with the cable fed through an orifice. Loddon was like that when I bought it with one corner cut off the rear doors when built to accommodate the cable. Nothing intrinsically unsafe about it just not best practice.

  36. I think the standard has remained the same for centuries, it's just that now we know about it. The default position for trusting anyone in any sort of authority, be it charity trustees or our governmrnt, should be total cynicism. Also, of course, of anyone who sets up as a critic of same.

  39. Both. Water a couple of feet down (baseplate) will never get below +4C even if the canal freezes over thickly because that's when it reaches maximum density; any lower than this and density decreases and it rises, which is why ice forms on the surface (and why life on Earth exists at all...). I also monitored the temperatures last winter (sensor inside battery bank) and it never got below +4C even in the coldest period with lots of sub-zero days when the canal froze. Victron are playing safe, you shouldn't charge LFP at full current at low temperatures, so the easy solution is to block all charging below +5C. Actually you can charge LFP at lower currents at lower temperatures without damage, which is what some manufacturers like BYD do to allow their batteries to be used for off-grid even when cold -- their 14kW battery (280Ah) has maximum charging current of 160A (~0.6C) above +12C, 80A (~0.3C) from +2C to +12C, and 60A (~0.2C) from -10C to -2C. Since 0.3C is 210A for my cells (700Ah) and the absolute maximum charging current is from the Quattro is 140A (when running on generator) this isn't a problem... 🙂

  40. This is precisely why a CO extinguisher should not be used inside a boat. To be honest the dry powder type are not much better. Extinguishers on a boat are not necessarily for putting out a fire but more accurately a device to assist escape(PS as already said).

  42. I don't think that <0.1W per dual socket -- so <0.5W with 5 of them, which I have -- is going to have the slightest effect on a boat. Especially given that they're powered from either shoreline or via an inverter which has *far* higher zero-load power than this... 😉 Of course you do have to have mains available from somewhere for them to work, and a USB converter driven directly from the battery doesn't need this. But most boats do have mains, at least when you're onboard -- and if you're not onboard and the mains is off, you won't be charging anything. The mains sockets are about twice as expensive as the DC ones you showed -- less if installed new instead of a standard mains socket -- but are also faster charging, and very convenient to use. Horses for courses... 😉

  43. In part because most boats with mains circuitry, include an on-board inverter that produces mains voltages when the boat is not plugged into shore power. Not all though, the boat we used to borrow had a shore inlet and sockets, but no inverter. This did not have any sort of on-board breaker or RCD panel and the level of safety was thus the same as using mains from an extension cable in any other scenario. The inlet was simply a convenient way to bring the power into the boat.

  46. Many years ago when I worked just off of Tottenham Court Road (London) the conversation worked around to dog shit. Several individuals said that they had seen 'deposits' on nearby vertical walls about a foot above the ground. A few days later someone came into the office having seen a dog back up to a wall and leave a steaming turd stuck to a wall. After that walking to and from the tube station was much more interesting.

  47. I'm not sure that's the way it was. That makes it look like us thin leisure bods actively wanted to persecute the others - but it was just, given the options, and bearing in mind both how much more home moorers pay and how most CCers abuse the system, that was the fairest of the choices given. I read the thing so long ago that I can't remember much about it, and tbh, care less. I just wish Allan would stop costing CRT a fortune with his letters and information requests, all of which are a total waste of everyone's time and money and achieve absolutely nothing except possibly making him feel important.

  48. Hi I thought i'd responded to this earlier but apparently not. We Certainly don't intend to exclude anyone, 90 years is a good old age so anyone ore any boats of any age are welcome! It would be nice to see a great mix of boats. Drop us an email to batchworthboatrally@gmail.com We can add you to the priority bookings list when bookings open in the new year.
