  2. or those who used to peer at my Kevin and ask if it was a steam engine. Also I've met lots of people who think that the hydraulic pipes on the ellum of my butty are for power steering. I even had a couple of people who, in all seriousness, thought that they were for brakes!!!

  7. But the ratio of dross seems a lot higher on FB than on here, so more sorting through the chaff seems necessary.

  16. The problem with that advice is that the 'not helpful' comments or suggestions could in fact be very helpful and hightlight something the enquirer had not considered, maybe, he has a bad back and did not know that he had to lift a 30-35kg gas cylinder onto the boat. The advice just to ignore something if you don't like it, or because it is contrary to what you want to hear is extremely poor advice. Just because you know something does not mean that a newbie who posts "seen some you tube videos & with the morgage being so expensive we are thinking about buying a boat" understands all of the ramifications of boat ownership.

  29. The best thing for keeping brass shiny is clear powder coating. Lasts for years and years. Where lacquer has been used and is breaking down, cellulose thinners (gunwash) is effective in removing the lacquer ready to repolish. Re-brassing is an electroplaters job and the environmental controls are so costly there are not many about who will take on anything other than production jobs. N

  30. Not so easy to get hold of, but Traffolyte is the way to go, I used perspex to match the Beta panel but my new panel is to replace the old Adverc DCM which was done in Traffolite and looked very good.

  37. Yes I recommend both, also set up stoppages alerts on the CRT website. There is also a fb group who assist through the (W) Rochdale Locks I believe, but probably seasonal.

  40. On mine, it went up and vented through the top corner of the front bulkhead. Fine for a gas or oil fired boiler but could be "interesting" if a stove ran away and boiled.

  43. For thin coach lines we used marine vinyl tape. We were told to make sure we got the thicker marine type. It went on very easily and I have to say is in better nick than the paint after 6 years. I got it from a company called Vinyl Cut Graphics in Kirkudbright. Ours were only 4mm wide and easy to go round large bends with eg the cabin back. I don’t know what wider vinyl would be like but it may be worth investigating. we used Silver coachlines on dark blue and it made an enormous difference to the looks even though it’s only 4mm wide NB I’m hopeless at choosing colours which was why we stuck with blue so won’t suggest any.

  47. What a strange 1st post. A broker will sell anything that he can make his '10%' on. The large number of buyers, each with different requiremenst mean that there will always be someone who wants whatever he has to sell.

  48. Good point. And on a related note, I'm constantly surprised how many boaters seem to hate CRT with a passion and consider them the lifelong enemy of boaters and spawn of the Devil.

  50. The Ailsa Craig RF series diesels have a curious way of increasing compression for starting- The rocker shaft is on eccentric bearings , and the decompression lever on the end of it has 3 positions , decompressed( exhaust valves are opened), normal running, and high compression for starting. The engine should not be run in high , return to normal as soon as it starts. Ah, we're talking Listers, I digress, as usual. Long time ago we ran a JP2 , couldn't tell the difference between HC and LC ,it was a tad worn though.
