  11. Oh please don’t talk sense it doesn’t suit the narrative of many of the posters on this forum!

  15. Instant gas water heaters are brilliant. You don't have to run the engine and piss off all the boats moored nearby to get hot water. And despite what people imagine, they only sip the gas. Probably way cheaper on fuel than heating water by running the diesel engine.

  22. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has responded to my queries - so helpful and very much appreciated. We're off tomorrow and have decided to go to Chirk, Montgomery and onward, finishing up with Llangollen as @IanD suggested. When we plotted it out it made a lot of sense and felt right... Looking forward to it - let's hope it all works out!

  28. Alan, please look into the difference between timeshare and shareboat - they are different, in important ways. I am sure you just made a slip and didn't fully read the posts, though. Share boating makes a LOT of sense if you want to do more than just occasionally hiring, but you can't see yourself using a boat for more than 4 weeks/year - for example if you work full time, and don't have the holiday allowance. But beware of comparing their costs to other boats, they get absolutely hammered (more than hire boats) and their life is like "dog years" for things like engine replacements, repaint, etc. An older shareboat is likely to be like trigger's broom, re-engined and re-painted and most of the important components on their 2nd or 3rd iteration.

  32. Depends what you mean. I carried 2, an 8’ long ash cabin shaft fitted with a boat hook and a 16’ long shaft with no hook, again ash, both used to help manouvering, mooring etc. Most Chandlers will stock the shorter, Brinklow Boat Services usually have the longer option.

  43. Yes, but the amount above ambient that can be achieved is dependent upon the flow rate. The numbers you quote are probably those where flow rate is as fast as possible, and the valve that can restrict flow is set to maximum. If you start to wind it down, the amount that the water is heated above ambient will increase. Simplistically if you are getting a 25 degree increase at full flow, then restricting the flow to half will double that to 50 degrees above ambient - too much for most purposes. Generally you can achieve a flow that still gives an adequate shower, but at a decent temperature.

  46. Think the previous owner wasnt exactly mechanically minded and the installation suffered from some interesting adaptions 😀 Moved this from Droitwich a while ago and can remember it being fairly empty of coolant and air locked when I collected it. Had a leak on the pipework on the engine somewhere which I seem to remember was down to a dodgy thread. Was a bit smoky at times and spent much of the move sweeping the roof of sooty bits that got blew out the exhaust-think it may have had the exhaust decoked ? It did have a habit of dying just as you tried to stop occasionally- it didnt appear to be lack of fuel supply etc nor overheating - you could coax it to start on one cylinder and give it a good hard rev and it would magically clear and then run OK -until the next time😀 Id guessed at sticky injector and/or fuel pump. Other than that was a lovely engine to chug about with -I did talk to someone about it once -if it was you apologies for repeating myself..
