  1. But the law requires CRT to allow 28 days for the licencee to rectify any problem with the statutory requirements of the licence. There is no such thing as a licence with an extra condition that they will revoke it immediately if their checks don't tally up. Any extra condition on a licence would be unlawful. Once the licence is issued it means CRT are satisfied the conditions have been met.

  2. Based in Rufford we transit the Bridgewater often. We have on a number occasions picked up and given a lift to the previous enforcement officer who was a really nice friendly fellow. We enjoyed catching up with tea and cake. However, in the last year or so we see more and more unmarked, unnamed, and un numbered boats often moored in the same areas of the Bridgewater. I imagine that it is these boats which attract the attention of the current enforcement officer. We don't have any intention of getting a short term licence for our transits because we slip along and make genuine but fairly slow progress. We don't overstay in the hot spots of Leigh, Worsley, Castlefield and Lymm. We continue to patronise the businesses along the way. Today it was diesel and lifejacket refurbish kit from Thorne Marine and shopped at the little store and PO in Moore. There are lots of moving boats around both hire and private. The Bridgewater is not only a very useful part of the connected system but a joy to use with its generous depth and width and plenty of delightful mooring spots. It's maybe a pity that a tiny number are abusing the canal's welcome and so causing this reaction from the owners.

  4. We managed to moor yesterday above Aldermaston Lock ( the small visitor mooring between the lock and the lift bridge has just room for two boats and was occupied). Used the gangplank for the first time in ages. Went to the Butt Inn, a few minutes' walk south down the main road from the wharf. Had never been there before, having favoured the immediately canalside pubs, like the Cunning Man and the Rowbarge. We had a very good time there, excellent meal, very friendly staff, nice garden, good choice of beers, well worth a visit.

  5. Ahhh, but there you have it. What you would consider a "reasonable living" might be way in excess of what someone else might consider it to be, or just as easy consider that amount to be completely downtrodden. How much do YOU need to earn before you consider it to be a "proper" job? It will be a different amount for each person or couple you meet living on a boat. Some will be on their own, some will be raising families, some will be trying to put a little away for their offspring's education and or inheritance, others won't have those needs. Some folk will need more to fund their entertainment needs. As in you'll more than likely to need a bit more in the bank if your someone who likes to go and weekly/monthly watch the football team you support than if your chosen pastime is spent bird watching or jogging. And on and on the differences go. We currently live on about 55K less a year than when we were both working full time and living in a small terrace house. I can guarantee you we are both much happier and healthier now than we were 3 years ago. Has our life style & priorities changed? You can bet your bottom dollar they have - for the better IMO Just because people can find ways of living without having the need for so much money, doesn't necessarily mean they aren't enjoying themselves as much as those earning "a reasonable amount" from a "proper" job. Just saying

  9. Hi Rach, i have been doing this and that, bit here and there, lost motivation, got things on my mind i think. It is ready to be painted, well the top deck is ready, i was going to paint it the weekend gone but it was that warm i didnt want to, so waited until early evening when it cooled a little and then i got distracted with something else. Oh i finished the lower screen frame/rail and was getting to sort the screen but i forgot to order the hinges for it so that went tits up aswell lol. Just not organised this week. Hinges arrived today though, aswell as the extra bits for the Tig welder to practice. Just need time now, and good weather,it gone down hill a little now. I have now decided to paint the whole boat down to the water line so a little of fettling here and there. Craters where the old gel coat has popped off. all along the gunwales, down the middle not to bad as that will be tread paint so only the bad holes were filled, the outer edge there were loads of them. These are the hollow spots i found, a few anyway, Look worse than they are, the real deep ones will be reglassed and filled to finish. the scratchs like... can be filled with stopper filler. along with the not so bad areas. This will not take long, a few hours i would say for the lot. Hi Steve, hows the garden ornament, not floated away in the floods i hope lol. Was thinking about that the other when talking to a mate. I still love it, make a cracking garden BBQ area with seating in. Looking forward to trying it out, i have had very little SS Tig work experience, i was ok on aluminium though, still done very little. I treated a bit like gas welding that i was good at may moons ago, similar ways i reckon. If i need any rod i will let you know then ida cheers, just the 19mm tube at the minute for the rails etc.

  10. "0.95 Ah all day" - what are you trying to say? Do you mean 0.95 amps for 24 hours? If so I simply do not believe any electric fridge would deliver such low consumption. That's 22.8 Ah, probably more like at least double that. The laptop sentence also makes little sense. Let us know how may amps your laptop draws and how long its on for, I very much doubt its 24 hours. You do not measure battery banks in watts, its done in Ah. Batteries are not charged by watts, they are charged by amps so your 440W panel equates to about (440/13) = about 33 amps but in the UK you will probably only get about 50% of that so say 16 amps at midday with less earlier and later. Conclusion: you are not charging your batteries enough and may have ruined them by sulphation. Do as Nick asked and you will get better quality help

  11. There is no such thing as "permission to use the boat as if it were licenced" .

  14. Because that is how it always ends up when somebody pushes the rules to breaking point. A new rule gets introduced that has a fall out far beyond the original miscreants. Yes, it would be "better" if the rule allowed the 7 days to be split into two chunks, but it adds complexity to the enforcement. Peel Holdings have looked at what legitimate use is made of the reciprocal arrangement, and will have concluded that MOST use is for single passages by boats doing the Cheshire Ring, and that very few boats make 2 passages (and yes we have done so ourselves). It would be great if Peel can be convinced to alter the arrangement, but that will be a case of persuasion, rather than demands. By way of a comparison, can anybody give me a definitive answer as to what the reciprocal side is? How many days? Any return limit? I know that the reciprocal arrangement is for a limited area, but what are the limits?Barbridge Junction Harecastle North Portal Liverpool docks Presumably there is an eastern limit on the L&L Presumably there is an eastern limit on the Rochdale All of Ashton, Peak Forest and Macc included? Presumably an eastern limit on the HNC

  15. September 1970 for my first time, I was about 4 weeks old and remember nothing of it unsurprisingly, apparently the only time I slept was when the engine was running. My whole childhood was boats, rallies, old boatmen talking about boats, pubs by canals with people talking old boats and old times. Every trip was a history lesson, we used to go in this arm with such and such from so and so. I cant tell you how much I miss it all. slightly later than first trip, about 78 somewhere on the shroppie iirc.

  16. The thing that surprises me most about Crick are the number of people that say they are buying a boat that have never actually been on one!

  17. Whilst I agree with the from the OPs point of view I think it would be very unfair on Ally. She would be nuts to do it unless she had indemnity insurance, especially if she was to be compensated for time. If she was not compensated then it would be unfair on her. If you have no friend you can trust to do such a job then pay a well recommended professional who should already have such insurance.

  18. Thanks Ray I enjoyed both, though I fear that David may have over egged the pudding when writing the lyrics. Even us oldies were a little too late, a sentiment echoed only a couple of days ago when I was in conversation with one of his contemporaries. I'm grateful to have caught the last few years. Dave

  19. Be sure to eliminate all other possible sources of the water under the floor. I would recommend thoroughly drying the affected area; and then running the taps on the kitchen and other sinks to be sure they are not contributing to the problem. For the last 24 years the previous owners of my project boat appear to have struggled with a shower leak; eventually conceding defeat and installing a bilge pump under the floor. The actual (remaining) source of the water was in fact a slight leak from the turned edge of the hose from the kitchen sink where it connected to the skin fitting; buried deep in the insulation behind the wall panels. 20. It does not really matter what the history is, the post relates to the law as it stands. Some seem to be ignoring that fact, in the rush to not answer the original post. You being one of them. It's simple enough, the law covers it, and CRT are abusing it. Whatever went before, is not relevant.

  21. I just read your blog and whilst I can understand how you feel, I was amazed when I realised who you were complaining about. Bill, Bens dad built my boat and I have met all the family many times and they are some of the nicest people you could wish to meet. Other than buying my boat from them I have no connection but my boat was properly put together, it's in its sixth year and absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it. I have also seen several examples of Bens work and in each case the quality has been excellent. Ken
