  2. I'm lost, is it a john Deere or a Ford Lister we are talking about?
  3. Thankyou - as this is a response to the previous article the live link is to that previous article.

  8. The Guardian (1 hour ago) : Your report about increases in licence fees for canal boats neglects to mention why the increase in fees is necessary (Fee hikes will price us out of canals, say houseboaters in England and Wales, 19 April). The Canal & River Trust (CRT) has, from its inception in 2012, received a grant from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to help with the finances of running and maintaining more than 2,000 miles of the 200-year-old inland waterways network. This grant is no longer index-linked, and over the next decade this will result in a shortfall in funding to the CRT of approximately £300m. This shortfall will have to come from somewhere, and a proportion of it has to come from increases in boat licence fees. A campaign called Fund Britain’s Waterways has been set up to try to get more funding from Defra for all Britain’s waterways. If it is successful, the large rise in fees will not be necessary. Some of the London boaters who seem most vocal in criticising the CRT would do well to support this campaign. Michael Geraghty Oleanna, Trent and Mersey canal In recent years many people have taken to living on water. Driving this trend is a housing crisis and the exorbitant cost of rental housing in many cities. One consequence is the virtual choking of canals in many urban areas. Many have become boat parks, straining water, refuse and sanitary facilities to the limit. Many would-be boaters buy the cheaper “continuous cruiser” licence, but with little intention of going anywhere. The waterways network faces enormous challenges, and the Canal & River Trust’s business model has problems of its own: many people like canals and enjoy the benefits, but it is boaters who pay to use them. The issue is not helped by people paying for a cheaper licence that does not reflect their use of the canal. Kathy Squires Ferndown, Dorset
  9. Please explain why the quote of the question means he did not want information about spare hoses.
  10. What?? he’s talking about spares? Not flexible hoses?
  11. Ah! Didn't know about that one. Sorry for misleading @Nightwatch.
  12. A Lister CK3 or a Ford tractor engine, I always thought it was a Dexta but its not
  13. There are plenty of "Cyclist dismount" signs though, and I am sure every time he sees one, Higgs dismounts and pushes his bike.
  14. I'd have quite the temper if someone lit a fire on me too
  15. Looks like a cut and shut to me.....
  16. I used HVO for a while, never got the tank to pure HVO, I reckon I got to about 85% HVO 15% red and had no issues with any of my Beta 43, Webasto Thermotop or Refleks stove.

  19. Today
  20. A few years ago I decided to build up a set of spare hoses for my Ford boat engines (6 litre, 6 cylinder). The hoses bore no resemblance to anything that could be found, then I saw a guy on ebay advertising 'made to measure' silicon hoses. A couple of them were different sizes at each end, but it was no problem. Just gave him the length and required fitting sizes, + any bends or curves and he made them up. Even get to choose the colour you want. Price were not dissimilar to 'off the shelf'similar items.

  22. The JD3 has been out of production by Beta for a while now and the man who had all the parts Knowledge has long since retired. I reckon that tapered hose was a handmade/small production run part wound from a tape of some sort of amalgamating rubber, I have seen similar things elsewhere. That hose on my engine is also looking not too new and sorting this out is on the todo list. A big rework of the copper pipe might be the way to go to get the diameter change done in copper rather than rubber. There is a very small chance that one of the oil cooler end caps might just fit but that would still likely need modes to the copper pipe. A specialist rubber company could likely make a similar hose but it might be costly.
  23. Thanks, but no thanks. I lost too much work with encrypted hard drives when they or the computer crashed, so I avoid encryption if at all possible. Anyway, my time and hence the site's days are numbered. (nothing bad at present, just old age) To be honest, in a number of respects the site is out of date and needs a fair bit of revision, with some stuff like CAN bus and lithium battery system where I don't have sufficient experience or knowledge. I can no longer summon up much enthusiasm, not helped by the way a few posters here treat my best efforts to help others. I have to ensure my wife/children will not be left with trying to close the site down when the time comes, so I must eventually shut it down while I am still able.
