Question No 3 - Insurance Providers

Featured Posts

Get several quotes from different companies. You may be surprised how much they vary.

Check you are getting cover for what you want before committing.

Unfortunately you only find out how good a company is when you claim.

Navigators & General,

Towergate,

Newton Crum,

GJW Direct,

Craftinsure,

And many others have been recommended on this site at some time or other.

Edited to change "Crumlin" back to wot I rote. Blurry autokorrect.

We are insured with Tower Gate Mardon. No idea as to their efficiency as we haven't had to claim.........................................yet.

Check whether you are covered for being towed / towing.

Check for cover on tidal waters also.

Im with Nav and Gen (owned by Zurich) via Collidge and Partners as a liveaboard. One claim settled in first year for water ingress (after a small fight with them). They are not a canal boat specialist so if you claim you will most likely be given a final settlement and told to go and get it done yourself. This may or may not be within your appetite to do whereas Sompo Canopius would appear to have their own network of repairers. If you dont need contents cover at £25k it will be about £200 pa cheaper than with it.

They cover the occassional tidal trip if notified. No excess if incident occurs in marina where I am based.

Craig Morely at Coversure is nice bloke to deal with although I retained the services of Nav and Gen this year as I didnt need to fill in any paperwork to just renew.

Here is an example all based on no contents cover and a total sum insured of £105,000

Towergate Marine £373.90
Haven Knox £465.65
Nav & Gen £383.26
Sompo Canopius £329.19

Hi Numpty, I'm with Nav & Gen, have been since I bought my boat 7 years ago. As I have carried out improvements and added value to my boat I have informed them and sent photos etc. They have added my improvements to the cover but have not increased the premium. So if you have a "fixer upper" you could do the same. just a thought..............

I insured with craft insure.. i never had to claim but they were always very helpful when i rang..and didn't have to jump through hoops to talk to people either

I've had the same experience with Craftinsure, although I also haven't experience of them dealing with a claim. However, I did once have a bit of a horlicks with my payment when moving accounts and they just got in touch real friendly like. No loss of cover, no snotty letters, just an 'is everything OK because you haven't paid us lately and we haven't heard from you' phone call from a very nice lady.

Michael Stimpson who was with Towergate how was probably the best bloke for boat insurance has started up once again.

That seems strange - he sold the original business to Towergate and stayed on for a while as 'manager'.

He's older than I (or looked it...) so I'm surprised. Perhaps somebody is cashing in on the name??

No its him.

Edit cause I hadn't finished

I think you will find its like when you sell any business, part of the deal is on paper you work for them for so long to stop you starting up in competition to them.

We went with Newton Crum when we bought our first boat in 2003. Within a month we had our cratch damaged by vandals - they paid the claim with no questions and as a result we have been with them ever since. The premiums have always seemed reasonable. I have occasionally checked other companies but have never got a quote to compare.

Most companies I asked for quotes on my new build self fit out wanted a proper valuation but lnsure 4 boats were fine with my own valuation. They were also a lot cheaper for the same cover less than half of a couple. Can't comment on them for claims and hope I never do have reason to.

Towergate were very good but appear to have seriously lost the plot in the last year or two. I note that Michael Stimpson (a boater who set up their marine policies) has recently severed all links with them and is now looking for another company to work with.

Euromarine are worth talking to.

At £100,000 I would suggest looking at am "agreed value" policy so that if you are unlucky enough to have a total loss (fire etc) you get paid out the insured value, not a valuation from the insurance company. Most policies are not agreed value so even though you will pay a high premium based on your 100k valuation you might not get this back. Euromarine will do agreed value this but it will cost a bit more.
