Here's one way of dealing with the risks caused by having no fenders. The helmsman was rather smart, I thought.

Whio came with a set of six pipe fenders attached to fastenings thru the gunnel. After a couple of months cruising the six became four so I removed the remainders to the security of a locker where they have remained since joined by an extra removed from the prop in the Hillmorten locks. They have though proved useful hung below waterline from the handrail when mooring on the Shroppie.

The gunnel fastening points have been used occasionally in conjunction with a carabiner to fasten a spring line.

All this talk about fenders around props has reminded me about coal sacks, I've had several of these round my prop at different times, should we consider coal sacks in the same way as fenders? May have to start a thread demanding nobody uses coal sacks and start mocking those that do.

The floating bags are much less of a problem, It's the ones under the surface that are an issue as they are much more likely to be drawn into the prop.
