Can they just close the navigation for an event like this, it's bad enough when the tow path is closed to mooring for an angling/cycle/walk events but to actually close the navigation I think is not acceptable.

Yes they can

And it 18:00 - 22:00 nightly for 3 nights.

Given where the lock is, this is causing minimal disruption to boaters

They shut motorways and railways for bridge repairs, so why not canals? It may be annoying for you, but how else could they carry out the work?

Where does it say this closure is for bridge repairs, or other maintenance of any sort?

What work are they carrying out? The notice says it's being closed for a social event.

Anyway to answer the OP I don't see the problem. Having been part of a team organising events people put a lot of work into some of these events for no personal gain and no agenda to inconviance boaters. The process involved is quite strenuous give these people some slack.

The full notice linked to by ditchcrawler makes it clear that the closure of navigation is only for two evenings, which shouldn't cause too much disruption to anyone's plans; hypothetically if a canal were closed to navigation for as long as several days just for a social event I would see that as wrong.

Oddly the notice says:

The event is on both evenings and is open to the public. Why not make this part of your visit to the area.

but gives no other clue as to what this mystery event is! Suspicious, maybe the police should turn up and check all is well?

However a typing error suggests time travel is involved:

From Date: 28th August 2015 at 18:00
To Date: 18th August 2015 at 22:00 inclusive
Was anyone there on the evening of the 18th to see people appearing from the future? A bit spooky after sunset, but that would have been worth visiting Stoke for.

"some of these events for no personal gain" This event is arranged by people making a lot of money, the sound engineer is on a 90K contract.

The original notice was not correct, the event is only 28th/29th but the lock is closed from 27th to 29th with bridge over. the event each day does not finish until 22.30, so on the last day the 29th the brige will not be removed until 2 hours after the finish.

Actually, the original notice WAS correct.

I know it was correct, because I first saw the blessed thing whilst passing through this lock.

The Heading of the notice tells you the start and end times of the whole period of the restrictions. The body of the notice explains the times during which access will be restricted.

That is how these notices are constructed. The heading tells you the Location, the type of restriction, and the time span. Sufficient information for you to decide whether the notice is of interest. If it is, you read the whole notice.

Now, I don't actually subscribe to the view that was expressed that because a lot of people have put a lot of effort into organising something on a voluntary basis, it makes it OK for them to disrupt.

However, the disruption that will be caused is minimal, and therefore more tolerable.

I can only assume that the need for a temporary bridge is a safety issue, and that it was determined that without it, there might be a risk of people falling into the lock.

Do we really want the H&S scrutiny that would follow?

And social events. London Marathon, Sky Ride, local half marathons etc etc etc.

"However, the disruption that will be caused is minimal"

So to stop Boats on Moorings on the Trent & Mercy + others from spending the Bank holiday weekend on the Caldon Canal is minimal, they will be unable to to return to their moorings late afternoon/evening on Bank Holiday Monday. Most Bank Holidays if the weather is fine there are long queues at these locks. This is anonther case of CRT not caring about Boaters. People in Stoke On Trent cross back and forewards across the the lock or exsisting bridges all the time.

Do many people pass through this particular lock after 6pm?

It is a serious question. Please can you give me an example of a journey that you think is going to be made difficult?

Is anybody REALLY going to be coming up to Etruria, with the intention of making for somewhere that would be sensible to moor that late in the day?

Likewise, setting off from Etruria for Trentham.

I totally agree and its about time local boaters made their voice heard to CRT. This isn't even a canal or waterway related event!!

http://www.appetitestoke.co.uk/whatson/bf15

Its about time CRT started to respect their users and not pander to every Tom Dick and Harry who needs something they don't have to provide.

How do you define CRT users then...? Surely anybody crossing a lock or walking down the towpath is a CRT user. You don't have to be on the water as a boat owner to enjoy the canals, like yourself not everybody owns a boat.

How many locks do you do after 6:00pm?

How many hire boaters bother after 6:00pm?

And I suggest you check your dates; BH Monday is NOT Included!
