Ex- Member
Haven't been able to log on for 20 minutes. Continuing server errors worse than ever this time. Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@canalworld.net and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. p1
Jerra
Its the worst I have had tonight. Usually only one or so a day. Tonight almost every thread I visit gets the error but if I click the back button and try again is generally works. On every thread except one. That thread has been really difficult taking about 5 attempts! Which thread was it? This one!!!

RLWP
That many guests doesn't look like crawlers and the like. It looks more like a deliberate DOS attack I notice we had a new most users figure last night of 3,100 at 1:11am. Surely 3,090 of those have to be guests What's going on? Richard Certainly over 3,000 guests and it is quite likely that the majority were either robots or googlers directed here because google had picked up on a word or sentence that matched a lot of search criterion. In the past, I have noticed that this sometimes happens when we have had a spam topic usually of a pornographic nature. These are removed quickly but we cannot be online all the time. MtB
Doesn't really ring true to me Graham. I can imagine the forum getting indexed by a few dozen search engines but it only takes a few milliseconds and they shut the connection and leave politely. This has been going on for days on end now so I doubt it is search engines. Besides, are there really 3000+ search engines out there? I can only think of about eight. Richard I'm afraid that only somebody with access to the server logs can tell us that for certain. I still say that it looks like a deliberate DOS attempt, and that you don't solve those by buying more capacity (because the attacker will up his capacity too) canalworld is a virtual host, which means that the DOS is against canalworld specifically, rather than against the box it sits on. According to Alexa, almost 10% of our traffic comes from India, which seems suspect
RLWP
How much comes from America, Dave? Peaking at 1:11am would match US users being awake Richard
NB Alnwick
The majority of 'guests' usually appear to be viewing one specific topic. We do get a lot of traffic from India but it may be that some topics contain a word that is frequently used by google searchers from that area - I think that although our forum is quite big by our standards it is still sufficiently small and specialised to be under the radar of malicious attackers. MtB
Would a simple fix would be to only allow access to the forum registered users? Ban guests from progressing past the CWF home page? MtB The majority of 'guests' usually appear to be viewing one specific topic. Delete that topic? MtB
