From around 3pm the snow came in thick & fast with some rather large flakes.

Had around 6" here now, very wet slushy snow which is weighing the trees & phone cables down, i'm sure it'll freeze overnight.

Not looking forward to the hours drive to Hospital in the morning for my MRI :(

Hi.

We live on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and in the area specified for deep snow. Well, it has snowed today, but not that much and it started to melt away as the sun went down. I think that ICE may well be the problem for the morrow. SWMBO works in Bridlington so the morning journey may well be,....interesting!

Winter tyres are superb. Mine cost less than my excess and they make a RWD BMW into a perfectly well behaved snow car. Spare wheels are cheap, even alloys are only worth £25 each at the scrappy!

Well the council here abouts have been magnificent......Not! The roads are atrocious, covered in ICE and no sign of any treatment overnight. And we are on a gritting route so god knows what the minor roads are like! :banghead:

The system caught a lot of councils out over a large area.

The snow came far sooner than anticipated and grit was rushed out, the back edge of the front turned to rain or sleet in many areas, with the temps lifting to 2 deg or above. The snowfall was also a lot further South than predicted even 6 hours earlier. This washed away the salt and then the temperatures dropped to minus 5 or 6 overnight.

A few biterly cold days to come and then round 3 of the snow starts Friday/Saturday - again, where exactly gets hit the worst is still not forecastable yet, however, with the cold block over us really getting entrenched, any deep low pressure trying to move in could result in proper blizzard conditions over a large area.

This is worth watching for anybody doubting the benefits of winter tyres. If you can afford the initial outlay it's a very simple decision, they're better all winter even if it doesn't snow, and on the odd occasion when there is snow the difference is night and day.

Edit - Failed attempt to embed you tube vid. Will keep trying, but any instructions in the meantime would be gratefully received!

Well yes, forcasting is still a dark art. But on the T.V., highways rep's stated that they were monitoring the ongoing situation. Well I have a rather cheap weather station and that told me far more than the Highways departments seemed to grasp, with all their available technology! It did thaw here in the early part of the night, then the temp's dropped sub zero. The result is not rocket science. They just seemed to have missed out the gritting bit around here!

Snowing like billy oh here (East Cleveland) this morning initially quite 'sleet like' but for the last half hour it's been big flakes.

The roads?? - no ours have not been properly treated either but it's the same every year now in Redcar & Cleveland we are convinced they just have the gritter lorries as ornaments.

In fairness Sheffield council are doing a grand job if keeping the roads clear. No complaints on that score, for once.

Can you ask your local authority if they would mind sending one of their wagons a bit further North please......

SWMBO works in Bridlington, but we live near Caistor! Getting to the bridge would be good!

No snow , ice begging to form on the canal by Foxton, one tap still working so filled up, ans diesel and coal from Callisto , bring it on.

Just filled up the heating tank, so chilled! Ah Foxton! Cannot think of a better place to overwinter.

We filled our water tank before we left the boat yesterday just to be on the safe side.

Last time we had a very cold spell the water pipes burst so the water was off for about eight weeks whilst they were fixed. They have since installed more heat tracers but it remains to be seen how effective they will be. Better safe than sorry as lugging water around was not fun!
