The generic term is "Duck", male or female.

A drake is a male Duck therefore it is a Mandarin Duck that happens to be a drake.

A female Duck is, of course, a duck.

However if asked what the picture of a male bovine was you would say a bull I presume, but cow is accepted as the over arching term for all members of the bovine species.

On a less jocular note I feel people need to know it is a drake as the drake is so much different (not just in mandarins) from the female.

EDIT: to correct typos and a bit of gobbledegook.

There is no actual common generic term for a single "cow/bull" though. Bovine is, as you mention, the closest, ox might do too and "cattle" is the plural generic.

Duck, however, is the accepted singular generic term, male or female.

"Mandarin Duck" is the correct term.

It is as you say, a drake (a male duck).

I suppose you'd have it as part of a chinky, yes, maybe with black bean sauce and flied lice.

Jerry, superb photos - would look good on a wildlife calendar for example.

what kind of camera do you need to get pics that good ?

Most decent cameras will

But you really need a Mandarin Duck Oops Drake

That would be essential to the photo
