Fitting a narrowboat with a wheel chair lift.

Featured Posts

We are just about to start installing a chair lift on a narrowboat (Barge) if anybody wants to see how it's done I will post some pictures. The nice Mr VAT man still grants zero rating on boats for the disabled which is very nice of him.

Yes, please. I have a friend who is in a wheelchair.

When we made the trip to Ledgard Bridge re our boat several years ago there was a boat in to have it's bottom blacked that had been built by your company with wheelchair access via hydraulic lift. Bernard (don't know whether he still works for you or not) showed us round.

Ok I will do some pictures when we start putting it in for you.

We did quite a lot of work on disability access when we built the community boat SERIOUS FUN a couple of years ago. It was quite upsetting at the time to discover how a lot of the mainstream lift manufacturers "prey" on the disabled with extortionate prices, in the end we now have the lifts produced in Holland by specialist industrial lift platform company.

Hi Gary!

I am disabled, but don't require a lift, but would be interested in ideas on easy access!

I would also be interested in anything/ideas that make life easier for disabled people cruising and living on board, PLEASE!

Hi Garry,

Have you got pictures and cost of your work.

We are in the process of doing the same to our Narrowboat but so far hit a dead end trying to find information on the subject.

Thanks

Roy

Hi Garry

Do you have any further information on this topic

E.g cost, difficulties, design, picture etc.

We are about to do the same thing but cannot find any information on it.

Regards

Roy

Gary hasn't been an active member here for quite a long time, Roy. This topic is almost ten years old

We have a wheelchair lift in our boat. No pictures at home but can take some at the weekend if that would be helpful. If you are near to Mercia you could have a look at it. It isn't a specialist 'wheelchair lift' just a hydraulic platform lift built from standard bits. So much cheaper!

And it was Mel that built in our lift when he built our hull. It looks like the later version in the photo is a bit beefier- ours only has the mechanism on one side. We chose Mel to build our hull because of his 'can do' attitude and enthusiasm for doing things that are a bit different.

Last year I skippered a boat for a disabled friend and his party. It was "Shropshire Lass II", hired from the Lynesl Trust

The pictures at the bottom of the web page might give you some ideas.

Dads system was very good very clever to you need an amazing bit of planning to pull it off well.

Dad had a chair lift at the bow and hoist rail that ran down the middle of the boat on the roof you could use 1 hoiset to get in and out of every room.

I believe Brinklow have just fitted a lifting into a semitrad. Pics on their FB page last week.

Well it is kind of a semi-trad, (now!).

It is actually the former historic working boat Lynx, but it has involved removing parts of a traditional style back cabin to create what might now I guess be called a semi-trad.

You couldn't do the same thing on a real semi-trad, I think, because the engine would be where the lift needs to go. Lynx still has an engine set further forward in a traditional style engine room.

Garry with his Lighthouse search engine, that's a blast from the past.

Surely all Gary's lighthouse search was was a site specific search in Google.

As Google is now the default setting for the CWDF search, what does Gary's lighthouse achieve that a default forum search now does not?

You have a point! The layout of the results is better. I don't have to open the forum page and get distracted! I just did a search on Gibbo and had a fascinating read. What a shame he's gone. He was only rude to people who seemed to deserve it.

Passed his boat last trip, I don't know if he finally sold it or not.
