Who lives furthest from their boat?

Just been noticing on various other threads people noting how far away their boats are from their home, particularly in the context of keeping an eye on them in this weather. It's about 200 miles* in my case :( which is the main reason why we're in the process of moving to a mooring where there'll be someone to keep an eye on the boat and give it a bit of TLC in my (very reluctant) absence.

What sort of solutions have others come up with?

*Living on the Sussex coast it was never going to be easy. There are moorings nearer home, of course - at a price - but very little (in fact nothing I can think of) south of the M25, which is the worst part of the journey anyway.

Simply paint it in faded BW colours, get some orange baling twine to tie it up with, and you can leave it on any convenient lock landing that is closer to home, literally for weeks at a time, without challenge!

We did live about 60 miles from the boat and couldn't get a mooring near our home town so we moved house instead :)

We now live about 8 miles from the boat.

That reminds me of a beer mat Marston's used about 25 years ago -

If you can't get Pedigree where you live ...

(Turn over beer mat)

MOVE!

Perhaps we should be applying that to canals and moorings - says he who lives 2+ hours from his boat.

We have a nice marina mooring at Pyrford on the river Wey, about 10mins from junction 10 of the M25. The drawback, of course, is the price. As the cost of road fuel rises, however, it doesn't seem quite so bad!

It's tempting; I have developed quite a liking for the Midlands. Unfortunately it's complicated by all sorts of offspring living in the house and outbuildings...

I recall boating past there and thinking 'what would happen if they all decided to come out and go boating at once?'.

My boat Barge - Maurice A - 448 miles, Uxbridge to Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, ROI. Around 10 hours, using Stena HSS Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire and a bit of waiting time at Holyhead.

Mrs TNC's Boat - NB Earnest - 2.1 miles Uxbridge to Harefield Marina. 5 mins!

147 miles in our case,

2 hours 30 mins on a Friday evening going out 2 hours 10 coming back Sunday

- we are currently exploring options to get closer.

Problem is we really like our current marina/mooring and the way it's run. If the co. than run Mercia opened a marina on the Northern part of the system we'd move like a shot.

6 miles. Each way mind. That can take 10 minutes in rush hour :)

Funnily enough, when we bought Pinmill one of the guys at the Marina advised us to moor further from home as it makes the journey more worthwhile and we would use the boat more, sadly Mrs. DickBrowne is actually Rev. DickBrowne (if that makes sense) and she's busy most Sunday's...

Makes sense for us to be as close as possible, really.
