  1. I think the idea is to "feel" for the rubbish. It was suggested that you should have a "feel" when all is clear to find out what that means so that when you come to "feel" in earnest you will know if something is there or not.
  2. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  3. Have a look here: Solid Fuel Technology Institute and here: Boat Safety Scheme Advice Without an effective protection panel at least 800mm gaps. With an effective protection panel at least 80mm plus the tiles (that is 10mm air gap, 25mm calcium silicate board and 45mm air gap)
  4. You must know some posh Edinburgh people. When I heard the joke, two Scottish widow ladies were discussing their lives following the loss of their husbands. The first asked "What do you do about sex?" The second replied, "About sex I have a cup of tea."
  5. This suggests the Naas Branch reopened in 1987: https://www.iwai.ie/kildare/places-of-interest/naas-branch-of-grand-canal/ This suggests the River Suck to Ballinasloe opened in 2001: https://www.irishtimes.com/news/new-canal-opens-this-week-1.308262
  6. Why not drain the header tank down, remove it and replace with a clear version so you can see the water level? Less exciting than a cobbled-together float indicator but longer lasting I would have thought.
  7. An article on the Chesterfield Canal Society website (https://chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk/gallery/photos/staveley-puddlebank/ ) suggests that the Staveley Puddlebank was built entirely of interlocked clay blocks. Does this help you?
  8. I'm glad you're speaking of zombie posts. I'm still here.
  9. Have a look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t19sRgqU4-4 I don't vouch for the effectiveness -I'm no engineer either.
  10. You must be using a particularly heavy toilet paper. Mine are hung to pull from the top and I've never suffered from gravitational issues.
  11. No, this is the correct way! Get yourself a roll holder that has enough distance between the wall and the roller to take the rolls you use without them touching the wall.
  12. Perhaps I'm missing something here. This fuel is said to be a hydrocarbon fuel but is, apparently, made from carbon monoxide and oxygen. An essential "ingredient" of a hydrocarbon is hydrogen - there is no hydrogen in either of the two stated components. It is said that the fuel, when burned, produces only water and heat. Water includes hydrogen. Where does it come from if it's not in the fuel? What happens to the carbon in the carbon monoxide, it certainly doesn't form part of the water and heat has no chemical composition. Has some miracle happened?
  13. And from further down: "Hard tops and safety glass windows replaced the canopy tops with isinglass curtains in the 1930’s. Today, isinglass curtains are the vinyl windows zipped into the canvas top used on a motorboat. These curtains can be rolled up and stored when the boat is in dry dock or when the weather is nice. They can be unrolled and zipped into place any time "there is a change in the weather." They hold tight against boat speeds up to 30 knots and a driving rain."
  14. In fact, isinglass curtains were made from a form of celluloid and now from vinyl - no fish (or whales) are hurt in the production of the curtains. You can safely ride in the Surrey with the fringe on top without offending against any vegetarian/vegan principles. https://classroom.synonym.com/what-are-isinglass-curtains-12081088.html
  15. And another; The boy stood on the burning deck Eating a melting Walls A piece fell down his trousers top And paralysed his kneecaps
  16. And when did you last check the filter on the water pump?
  17. When I had a boat, I had this problem. I found I needed to empty the tank, open it up and clean out the loose bits of rust that had collected inside. Eventually, they break down and move to the outlet blocking the water supply to the pump. I'm ashamed to say I did not de-rust and repaint the tank - I left that until I could get a round tuit. That day did not arrive before I retired from boating. Perhaps that's what Chris T needs to do. I've found the topic I started when I had this problem: Here
