A CRT notice that I can't understand.

Notice Alert

Trent & Mersey Canal
Location: Harecastle Tunnel, Kidsgrove
Starts At: Harecastle Tunnel North Portal
Ends At: Harecastle Tunnel North Portal
Up Stream Winding Hole: Junction with Macclesfield Canal
Down Stream Winding Hole: Junction with Caldon Canal

Monday 16 September 2024 08:00 until Friday 27 September 2024 16:00

Type: Navigation Restriction
Reason: Repair

Original message:

A navigational restriction is required for upstream brickwork repairs in the north tunnel.

We will be working within the navigation during the time that craft are sailing south through the tunnel.

Boaters may be held up for a very short period of time, so that staff and resources can be cleared from the navigation.

We will work closely with our customers and the tunnel keeper to ensure that disruption to passage is minimal.

You can view this notice and its map online here:

Does it mean that they will be working in the tunnel whilst boats are going south?   How long will they have to work before the northbound boats arrive?

I presumed there will be doing some work after boats have entered the North Portal and will complete before boats from the South arrive.  Boats entering from the South may be held up whilst waiting for them to complete the works.

I've given up worrying about most of these notices. I expect they'll either let me through or they won't when I arrive. Same applies to the Sandon lock saga. The only thing I'm sure of these days is that a four week trip will take six weeks, if I'm lucky enough to complete it at all. I think it's eight years since I planned a long cruise and actually did it.

Not always CRT's fault. Vandals this year, and then there was the parrot.

The parrot ???, that needs more info! I have this vision of a parrot ( a big one) standing mid channel and not allowing boats to pass.

Looks like a pragmatic solution that allows boats to continue using the tunnel while CRT carry out necessary repairs.

Yes. It looks to me as though they might be driving into the tunnel in a work boat to do some sort of maintenance close to the mouth which can be stopped at any point, and coming out each time a boat arrives to let it through.

But what about the parrot Arthur?

I included the parrot, I admit, as clickbait purely for my own amusement. It's a long story, and would bore you all to tears. But the parrot started the rot on a six week boat trip from hell a couple of years ago that nearly made me decide to sell up and pack it all in.

If you really want to know, I'll write the whole ghastly trip up and put it in the "cruise diaries" section.

Yes please, it will make better reading than a lot of stuff on here.

OK, it'll take a day or two. I've tried to obliterate it from my memory to avoid lasting psychological damage. It may have to wait till I get home and can use a proper keyboard that knows how to spell.

One of these days I'd like to be able to write a humorous piece (and have it published, as if!) that completely passes the spell checker but is equally incomprehensible through the use of the typical mis-replacements that go unspotted when we rely too much on no red udderlines.
